Reading some Peirce.

The Darwinian controversy is, in large part, a question of logic. Mr. Darwin proposed to apply the statistical method to biology. The same thing has been done in a widely different branch of science, the theory of gases. Though unable to say what the movements of any particular molecule of gas would be on a certain hypothesis regarding the constitution of this class of bodies, Clausius and Maxwell were yet able, eight years before the publication of Darwin's immortal work, by the application of the doctrine of probabilities, to predict that in the long run such and such a proportion of the molecules would, under given circumstances, acquire such and such velocities; that there would take place, every second, such and such a relative number of collisions, etc.; and from these propositions were able to deduce certain properties of gases, especially in regard to their heat-relations. In like manner, Darwin, while unable to say what the operation of variation and natural selection in any individual case will be, demonstrates that in the long run they will, or would, adapt animals to their circumstances. Whether or not existing animal forms are due to such action, or what position the theory ought to take, forms the subject of a discussion in which questions of fact and questions of logic are curiously interlaced.

One could simply watch the film "The Wind Rises" and understand history better than Gladwell explains it, apparently.

One gets the impression that the change of command was the impetus for the firebombing campaign; this isn’t exactly a novel argument: a number of historians have made it.58 In Chapter Seven, he writes about the development of M-69 incendiaries, their testing, and Hansell’s relief, but once again offers very little explanation or detail.59 He states that the United States had identified the vulnerability of Japanese cities based on a 1942 Harper’s Magazine article published a few months after Pearl Harbor.60 In fact, the susceptibility of Japanese cities to catastrophic fire was hardly a new discovery. It had long been recognized by observers with even a passing familiarity with Japan and had been starkly demonstrated by the destruction that followed the 1923 Tokyo earthquake, when vast sections of the city were consumed by fire.61 In 1932, the retired Brigadier General Billy Mitchell predicted that in a future war with Japan, “incendiary projectiles would burn the cities to the ground in short order.”

I'm losing my mind here. Does Gladwell say _nothing_ about Doolittle's 8th?

This more or less closes the European theatre, which again is negligence. The subsequent pause in deep penetrations was therefore less an admission of doctrinal failure than a recognition that the campaign had outrun its material and tactical foundations. When the Eighth Air Force returned in strength in early 1944, it did so in a fundamentally different environment: with P-51 and extended-range P-47 escorts, improved radar navigation and bombing raids, a larger and more experienced force, and a deliberate strategy aimed at destroying the Luftwaffe in the air and on the ground. Only under those conditions did daylight precision bombing begin to produce the cumulative industrial effects that prewar planners had envisioned.

These are both dubious at best. The AAF had already recognized the limitations of the Norden bombsight in combat as early as March 1943. Its effectiveness varied significantly from one bombardier to another and was further degraded by weather, flak, evasive maneuvers, and the sheer complexity of formation bombing.43 In response, bomber units abandoned the idea that each aircraft would conduct an independent precision run. Instead, the formation relied on a lead bombardier: only the lead aircraft actively aimed using the Norden, while the remaining aircraft in the “combat box” released their bombs when they observed the lead bomber’s salvo.
