Watched my second Aki Kaurismäki film tonight. I’ve definitely slept on his work for too long.
The Odyssey was my fourth favourite film this week. #LetterboxdFriday #LastFourWatched
Reading Strumpet City pushed me to explore Irish writing in a much more systematic way and ultimately led to me teach courses in Irish fiction (though I’ve still never taught Strumpet City).
Thanks, Gabino! Since the All Star break just ended, I want to share my two nonfiction baseball books: 100 MILES OF BASEBALL (co-written with Heidi LM Jacobs) and MAKESHIFT FIELDS. Both take the reader to baseball far outside the major leagues.
Thanks, Gabino. ON COMICS AND GRIEF combines a look at the comics of 1976 with creative nonfiction about my mom’s life and grief at her death. It’s partially about how all the different parts of our lives fit together.
Thelma Ritter makes any film better. #LetterboxdFriday #LastFourWatched
Recent albums I’ve been digging over the past couple of months. Music from Bleachers, Olivia Rodrigo, Johnny Blue Skies (aka Sturgill Simpson), Thomas Dollbaum, Kevin Morby, and Ratboys. Middle photo was taken in Ottawa.
Castle, Tanaka, Hellman, and my new favourite Antonioni #LetterboxdFriday #LastFourWatched
My 4th-year seminar this fall. Always a joy to teach these seminars and I’m particularly looking forward to this one.
An overlooked noir gem, a disturbing example of Dogme 95, and a bit of Hitchcock #LetterboxdFriday #LastFourWatched
Recent albums I’ve been digging over the past couple of months. Music from Kacey Musgraves, Aldous Harding, Angine de Poitrine, The Lemon Twigs, Cardinals, and Cat Clyde. Middle photo is one of mine from Antwerp.
Friday afternoon with a High Life and an Irish novel for my 1966 reading project.
All the books for the 4th year seminar I'm teaching in the fall. Contemporary Fiction by Irish Women.
