EVIL DEAD BURN: Relentlessly vicious. Exceedingly nasty. I don't know how much they trimmed to avoid an NC-17, but it doesn't seem like much. And yet, underneath, the movie actually says something meaningful about an overdone horror trope, making the hell of domestic violence agonizingly real.
From the first page of Spike Lee's diary as he prepares to write DO THE RIGHT THING.
DRY LEAF: Alexandre Koberidze combines Lynch's deliberately smudgy INLAND EMPIRE visuals, Kiarostami's elevation of the everyday and Weerasethakul's insistence that it's OK to doze in his films to turn the building blocks of movies and life into a fascinating abstraction. An otherworldly experience.
THE BREADWINNER: An extended ad for Toyota, Walmart, Shark Tank, the Tennessee Titans, All laundry detergent, Kentucky Fried Chicken, Taylor Swift and, eventually, Nate Bargatze's standup specials, which I swear are funnier, more self-deprecating and humane than this colossally lazy, inept debacle.
"Not owning any Sonny Rollins records is like not owning any Aretha Franklin records--his sheer physical presence is something no aural sensualist should live without." -- Robert Christgau in 1984.
Here's the final Screen Cannes Jury Grid. Maybe this year's Competition wasn't as strong as recent editions, but we did end up with four films averaging 3.1 stars or better (out of four), which is rare: www.screendaily.com/cannes-jury-...
THE MAN I LOVE: For a third straight film, Ira Sachs creates an atmosphere of electric immediacy that makes you think anything could happen at any moment. These people lived, loved, struggled and made art, and then they were gone. Sachs refuses to let them be forgotten. A stunning achievement.
The latest edition of Screen International's Cannes Jury Grid is now live. And we have a new film in second place. www.screendaily.com/cannes-jury-...
THE UNKNOWN: If you could actually see yourself as everyone else sees you, how terrifying a proposition would that be? This self-serious body-swap drama gets by on its insistence that we don't really want to know how much of our identity stems from our physical being. A freaky time at the arthouse.
The latest edition of Screen International's Cannes Jury Grid is live. I'm higher than the consensus on both MOULIN and FJORD. www.screendaily.com/cannes-jury-...
The latest edition of Screen’s Cannes Jury Grid just went live. We’ve got a new film at the bottom of the heap. www.screendaily.com/cannes-jury-...
I figured ALL OF A SUDDEN would now sit atop Screen's Cannes Jury Grid. But I was mistaken. www.screendaily.com/cannes-jury-...
When I thought of Rex Reed, I always recalled this behind-the-scenes anecdote from the New York Film Critics Circle vote in 2006. Clearly, he was no fan of UNITED 93. arktimes.com/the-moviegoe...
Just a reminder: Screen International has no paywall during the entirety of the Cannes Film Festival, starting now. All the news, reviews, podcasts and critics' grid are open. www.screendaily.com
Greetings from Cannes. The calm before the (quite possibly literal) storm.
It has now been 10 years since Radiohead's most recent album, A MOON SHAPED POOL, came out. It remains their most melancholy, dreamy and spiritually exhausted, ending with the tearful sigh of "True Love Waits." The band didn't quite disappear completely afterward. But sometimes it feels like it.
Weirdly, the sequel I most thought of while watching THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA 2 was T2 TRAINSPOTTING. In both films, the good times (such as they were) are over, and now everybody has to decide how to make the best of it. T2 is better because it embraces that bitter, wistful resignation.
There are many things I've found depressing in the aftermath of the White House Correspondents' Dinner shooting. But Dana White's hell-yeah-bro response might be the most soul-destroying. variety.com/2026/tv/news...
On Sunday, April 12, I'll be moderating two Q&As for THE CHRISTOPHERS with director Steven Soderbergh and writer Ed Solomon at the AMC Century City 15. Tickets and info here: www.amctheatres.com/movies/the-c...
