13. Octopath Traveler the soundtrack? the artstyle? the combat? the different storylines? it's not for everyone, sure, but so many people hate on this game because they actually want a completely different game and that's just frustrating. If you can commit to this kind of game it'll dazzle you.
12. Avowed I don't get the mixed reception this game got initially. one of the very very few games I got on release day and I had a banger of a time. I'm normally not a 1st/3rd person action gamer, but I learned the ropes quickly and loved experiencing another part of the Pillars of Eternity world.
11. Pillars of Eternity another chance discovery. I was browsing through the switch sale and it caught my eye. sadly the switch port is trash, so I got in on GOG, and later on steam. the spiritual successor of the old Baldur's Gate games, a dark, decision heavy fantasy crpg with sci-fi touches.
10. Fire Emblem Awakening I came across this game by pure happenstance. I asked for game recs and a friend of mine dropped a name I hadn't heard before: Fire Emblem. I bought it almost blindly and didn't regret it one second. super memorable cast of characters, banger cutscenes, fantastic combat.
9. Pokémon Platinum yeah I can't omit Pokémon from this list and Platinum is my favourite mainline Pokémon game. it has, in my opinion, the biggest jump in quality, design, and features compared to it's previous generation. I love Sinnoh, I think the story is comparably good, and I had a blast.
8. Die Siedler III yeah well. my mother surprised me with that game one day, early 00s, and well, it shaped me big time. I sucked at first, but I loved the simple, charming graphics and something we Germans call Wuselfaktor. city builders/settling games have been a big part of my gaming ever since.
7. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 yeah what can I say, THE surprise hit of 2025 for anyone I know who played it. turn based, but reactive, lots of build diversity, enemy diversity, heartbreak, even more heartbreak, mystery, plot twists and so, so many metaphors and tiny heartbreaking details.
6. TLOZ Link's Awakening another game from my birth year, my first Legend of Zelda game and together with Pokémon Yellow and Secret of Mana basically the extent of my gaming around the year 2000. there are few games I have completed as often as this one and it still gives me a lot of feelings.
5. The Last Spell the apocalypse is upon us, the world is overrun by monsters and you have to do a last stand trying to protect a group of mages preparing a spell that may save the world. heavy metal soundtrack, isometric hack n slash, endless builds, great roguelike progression, 10/10 atmosphere

4. Secret of Mana times were simple. late 90s, sitting in my mum's best friend's living room, cigarette smoke everywhere on the carpet, controller in hand, playing on a console which my parents would never allow me. it's impossible to recreate that feeling now, and sure, it's aged, but man. maaaan.
3. Stardew Valley I do not need to recommend this game. very few games have ever had a similar impact on gaming as a hobby in general as this game had. ConcernedApe is one of the most dedicated and humble game developers ever. SDV is a once in a lifetime game and I can't believe it's just 15€.
2. Against the Storm ah yes. a post-apocalyptic roguelike survival city builder. looks cool, I thought. soothing woodland atmosphere, rain everywhere, buildings and production chains and... oops, I just couldn't put this game down for literal weeks. great progression, near endless replayability.
1. Titan Quest recommended to me by a friend in school in like 2010(?), TQ is my most played game in terms of total hours played with an estimated 2000h across multiple PCs and versions. I've loved greek mythology since childhood, TQ has great build diversity and I'm excited for it's successor.
