Don't worry, I'll make sure everyone knows exactly what brand of golf clubs Dennis and Palmer use (maybe Tommy Armour?) and whether they're steel or graphite shafts 👍 (Dennis seems like a traditionalist steel man but I could see Palmer preferring the lighter and more flexible feel of graphite)
What do you think gamers, would you pay a premium for this?
TooManyGames was amazing. Nothing beats getting out and actually meeting other developers and players in person, and I still can't believe we walked away with three award nominations (including Best In Show ‼️) and a win for Best Visual Novel. An all-around great event, we will definitely be back 😎
We're extremely honored to have won the Best Visual Novel award at TooManyGames! We set out to make the kind of game that we wanted to play, with no real expectations, so to get this kind of recognition is surreal. So thankful to everyone who has enjoyed the game 🙂↕️
We're here at the TooManyGames indie showcase (complete with model train 🚂) Come stop by if you're here this weekend! You may even have a chance to demo our mythical SNES build 👁️
(One of my favorite little things I've ever written is this track from "Mask of the Reaper", where I borrowed the arpeggios from the guitar solo section of "Don't Fear The Reaper" and developed them into fun a level theme 💀)
Before Detective Instinct, many members of our team collaborated on making games for GBJam, a Game Boy themed game jam. Great times. Learned a lot, and had the opportunity to compose a lot of music for GB limitations, one of my favorite things to do 😌 You can play 'em here: gallowaygames.itch.io
ICYMI: We'll have a booth at TooManyGames from June 26-28, and we're nominated for the Best Visual Novel award! If you're going, come visit us! We'll have demo stations to play the game on many platforms 👀
Detective Instinct will have a booth at TooManyGames later this month, from June 26-28! If you're around the Philadelphia area, come by and say hi! We may even have some fun surprises at our booth 👀 toomanygames.com
Scorsese's storyboards for Taxi Driver were a big inspiration for me, a poor artist, to feel confident drawing ideas to share with our illustrators for DI. I can't understand why so much of the older generation of artists are swayed by this crap when they already had it all figured out.
A recent user review of our indie mystery adventure game put it this way: "Playing this game is like a rainy Sunday evening wrapped up in a blanket watching Columbo." If that sounds as appealing to you as it does to me, we're 25% off on Switch in the US for the next week 🌞
DQ heroes are usually designed somewhat generically to make it easy for players to project their own personality onto them, so I find this hero design interesting, since it has a lot of its own weird character. See the (alleged) DQ6 hero first draft in comparison to the final to see what I mean:
We're participating in The Storyteller's Festival with our 25% discount 😊 This is always one of the best Steam events each year with great deals and demos on narrative games, so be sure to check it out! store.steampowered.com/developer/Tw...
These devs (us) made an ADV game that feels like something straight off the DS 👀 - Compelling mystery about a vanishing woman on a train - Gameplay like investigations in Ace Attorney/Famicom Detective Club - Pre-rendered 3D BGs It's called Detective Instinct. And it's 25% off on Steam right now!
Did you know? Our OST is available on Bandcamp with a full liner notes booklet - AND it's Bandcamp Friday, the perfect day (for me) for you to check it out 👀 Here's a preview of the booklet, which has commentary on every tune and details about the game! 🔽 jalopestl.bandcamp.com/album/detect...

I'm in a good mood. Weather's nice, weekend's almost here. So how about a quick discount? 💵 Our DS-inspired adventure game is 25% off on Switch for the next week. The perfect game to take outside with you on a warm spring afternoon 🌞
The first CD I've bought in over a decade. How could I resist?
True story: Detective Instinct was originally going to be a Beatles fangame. In the end, we scrapped it to do something completely different, with this one NPC the only remaining hint at the project's true origins. Peace and love to everyone at this beginning of April ☮️❤️
Development on Detective Instinct started around this time 4 years ago ‼️ Here's a handful of character sketches from March 2022. At this point, the story treatment was finished and programming had just begun. Hard to believe it's been so long.
One upside of making a mystery game that takes place on a train is that you have no shortage of great visual reference material to pull from. Here's some stills from various movies I compiled early in development. Can you guess what all of these are from? 🤔
And, of course, if you find this sort of thing interesting, you can see it in action in our full game, which will be 20% off for the next week on Steam for the Spring Sale 👀 If classic command-select gameplay, DS-era aesthetics, and compelling and emotional stories are your thing, take a look!
In case anyone's curious what this kind of thing looks like practically, here's one line in Detective Instinct. Control codes for fading out/starting music in a specific number of frames, pausing the text printing for a specific number of frames, changing expression mid-line, text speed, etc.
ADVs are a great genre for coming up with creative solutions for expression with low budgets. The recent Famitsu interview between Ishiyama (director of Paranormasight) and Yuji Horii goes into that (and similarly how not having voice acting lets you refine scripts until the end of development)
We're participating in the Curious Odyssey festival on Steam with our 20% discount 👀 Check out ours and a bunch of other interesting narrative games from now until next Wednesday! We have a free demo of our first chapter if you want to give it a try :) store.steampowered.com/curator/4589...
Detective Instinct is ON SALE! We'll be 20% off on Steam through the end of the Steam Spring Sale - so pretty much from now until March 26th! 😮 If you, like me, are yearning for another ADV experience post-Paranormasight, maybe you'd enjoy this? 👁️ store.steampowered.com/app/2689930/...
I'm a big fan of Yumeko and Sodo, myself.
