I'm in Bordeaux for a few days, it is once again super hot here (38C today). The Bassin d'Arcachon is closed, evacuated last night, due to forest fires. You can see the smoke from Bordeaux. The air smelt of camp fired this evening and ash was falling from the sky.

I love these pedestrian traffic lights on the pavements they have in Korea. You can be glued to your phone and still know when it's safe to cross.

Holidaying in Lisbon. We stopped at the viewpoint "Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara" which had lovely views over to the castle. We got some overpriced drinks and tapas, the highlight for me being this gentleman prepare our delicious sliced meats.

I was recently given an Astromaster 130 telescope and this evening found Jupiter. Seeing the moons for myself was such an amazing feeling. I could almost imagine the utter marvel that Galileo must have felt 400 years ago. Poor quality photos attached. #telescope #astronomy #jupiter

I was impressed by the art on the side of these large solos in Sables d'Olonne.

I always find the seaside so primordial. Humans hundreds of thousands of years ago had the same experience as us now, kicking sand, skipping over rivulets, watching little fish dart in low tide pools.

In Nantes there are these uncannily life-like colourful statues, the current art installation at the Place Royale.

I was at a birthday party in France on Saturday; in typical French style we played pétanque. Also super impressive curly moustache from the gentleman in the foreground.

The elephant's trunk is so heavy that they will rest it in their tusks.

A termite mound. Apparently the queen can live up to 35 years. The mound is used to keep the underground chambers at a constant temperature, it acts like a chimney. #madikwe #safari

The white rhino is so called because it has a wide mouth, wide is "wijd" in Dutch and sounds like white.

This baobab tree in Victoria Falls is apparently 1200 years old. Baobab trees can store lots of water, elephants know this and can pierce the tree with their tusks to drink when necessary. Also by this tree, another tree carved by Bob Marley. #zimbabwe #nature

Despite learning about civil rights and the end of segregation in the US, it was still shocking to be confronted with the more recent reality in South Africa. I have vague memories of the end of Apartheid in the 1990s, seen on TV when I was younger.

Beautiful view of the tops of clouds from Table Mountain. Before the clouds briefly covered the summit, we had far reaching views over the land and sea.

2 delayed flights but we made it to Cape Town, door to door in about 22 hours. Exciting view of Table mountain on the approach. Also fascinating to see all the national planes (Malawi, Namibia, Zimbabwe...). Looking forward to the adventure.

Stafford, county town of Staffordshire. There is a row of alms houses from around 1600. Fascinating to see how small the doors were! Also, "Ancient High House", jutting out over the high street.
