"I couldn’t find an up-to-date map of travel access restrictions in #Qinghai Province, so I made one myself. It was a good excuse to learn #QGIS. 😅 Hope it’s useful!

A combination of military facilities, restricted administrative zones, and other poorly documented access controls has left some chunks of Qinghai functionally closed or permit-restricted to foreign travelers. Entire counties will either be fully restricted, or allow pass-through but not overnight stays.

These restrictions have changed over time and have led to more than a few tourists, especially long-distance cyclists, finding themselves in a region they aren’t supposed to be, escorted by the PSB to the next city.

When people think of Chinese travel restrictions (they generally think of #Tibet (which is accessible on tours via a combination of the Tibet Travel Permit and other local travel permits) or maybe #Xinjiang (which actually isn’t restricted at all, except for a few border counties). But actually Qinghai is likely the most restricted province in China overall.

Qinghai basically overlaps with the ancient Tibetan kingdom of #Amdo. There are just 6m people in all of Qinghai, and nearly half of them live in the capital, #Xining, making the rest of the province about as sparsely populated as the Tibetan Autonomous Region today." David Fishman

The UK All-Party Parliamentary Group on 3Tibet has condemned China’s new “Ethnic Unity and Progress Law” as an instrument of forced assimilation, warning it threatens #Tibetan language, culture, religion & identity, and may enable #transnationalrepression abroad.

Bhumpa Gyal spent years helping build a #Tibetan language digital commons: supporting independent websites, digital literacy, & cultural preservation online. Arrested in 2020 & sentenced to 7 years in prison, his case reflects the risks faced by technologists & cultural workers under repression.

China: Tibetan religious leader disappeared: Choktrul Dorje Ten Rinpoche

Choktrul Dorje Ten Rinpoche, a Tibetan religious and education leader, has been missing since December 2025 after he was reportedly taken into custody by authorities in Qinghai province, China. Since then, there has been almost no information about his fate or whereabouts. The authorities should urgently disclose his location, ensure his rights are protected, and release him unless there is sufficient credible evidence of a recognisable criminal offence.
