Were I to teach, I'd start with this excellent 1990 Matthew Baigell article in what is now American Art. To its detriment, the field has all but ignored it for 36 years.

The Japanese American National Museum is leading the response to the White House's latest absurd attacks on Smithsonian leadership. Every US art museum should be responding similarly, and now. By now it's obvious that a Trump attack on one is intended as a Trump attack on all.
The latest Modern Art Notes Podcast features Guyanese-British artist Hew Locke on the occasion of a survey of his work arriving at the Museum of Fine Arts Houston. manpodcast.com/portfolio/no... 🍎: podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/t... 🔊: open.spotify.com/show/25SUibT...
1/ The eager and extreme racialization and white supremacy. 2/ The total, almost sadly funny lack of historical knowledge. 3/ Art museums, all of them, should read this tweet and think about what work their historical US/American galleries are doing, including in their texts.

This is tortured mealy-mouthedness. Media outlets, especially the New York Times, need to be willing to refer to white supremacy as "white supremacy."

1. There was no such thing as the Hudson River School. It was and is a fabrication. Thoughtful scholars don't perpetuate fictions such as this. 2. Good painters did not hew to what was in their field of vision. Painters were and are not transcriptionists. 3. Sigh.
This Bierstadt-Earl installation at the Worcester Art Museum is intense. Two paintings made 60+ years apart argue for European-American claims to Native land taken after violence and, at Yosemite, genocide. This is one way White people have told stories about 'our' land, destiny, &c.
The Washington Post reports that the Trump administration just confirmed it is targeting West Potomac Park for its GAH sculpture park. In January, when WaPo first reported Trump's target GAH site, I explained why we should take this neo-Redeemer project seriously. www.instagram.com/p/DTffj1XEaq...

Better than the left, the right understands the power of art to influence the United States. This has been true since at least 1890. (In a related story, the book on which I'm now working is about this.)
The odious #plexijail installation trend is spreading. This is among the worst. 🤮 If you're going to do this, just exhibit a page in a book instead.
Do not miss Sebastian Smee's review of Victoria Johnson's "Glorious Country," a biography of Frederic Church. Here's some of the reason Smee's review and Johnson's book are so valuable (plus some background on why I started researching Church's pictures). www.instagram.com/p/DYPPqEnkX6...

In MOCA's "Monuments" exhibition, Kahlil Robert Irving connects Saarinen's Gateway Arch, which celebrates US imperialism and the mass killing the US supported in claiming land within its footprint, and recent state violence committed against Black people by police. www.instagram.com/p/DXuLMEFESa...

Bizarre. I know this is in an advertorial, but... Who is waving off Church, the greatest painter of the US 19thC, as 'provincial?!' Yes, "Hudson River School" is both false & market-advanced balderdash, but it is not why Church is under-presented in this, his 200th birthday year. Oofs all around.
