It was so beautiful, so pure, the perfect research methods piece and somehow completely ignored by Keir Starmer even though it explained exactly how he shot himself in the dick with his own gun.

The timing of this highly salient event during ongoing fieldwork for the British Election Study (Fieldhouse et al., 2025) enables us to leverage an ‘unexpected event during survey design’ (UESD) identification strategy (Munoz et al.,2020) to identify the causal effects of exposure to Labour’s
rhetorical shift. By exploiting both the as-good-as-random variation in survey timing and a panel data framework, we estimate within-individual
changes in immigration attitudes, party perceptions, and vote intentions attributable to treatment. **Our identification strategy thus offers a rare combination of internal and external validity: exogenous assignment to a real-world treatment in a large-N survey.** [yeah baby]
Our analysis proceeds in three steps. First, we show that Starmer’s speech caused a sharp increase in the salience of immigration, evidenced by increased media reporting as well as spikes in internet search activity and online political discussion. Second, we demonstrate that exposure to the speech caused voters to update their perceptions of
the UK Labour Party, identifying the social democratic party as more anti-immigration and right-leaning. This re-evaluation of the party’s position, however, coincided with more negative assessments of the party’s handling of the issue alongside a spike in the overall assessment of immigration as the most important issue of the day. Rather than neutralising the issue, Labour’s accommodation made it more salient. Finally, we demonstrate that Labour’s shift right-ward on immigration provided zero electoral rewards. Instead, we find robust evidence that treatment induced within-individual declines in Labour support across several measures. On average, treatment decreased voting intentions for Labour by 1.2 percentage-points (p<0.05) and resulted in a
3.9 percentage-point (p<0.05) haemorrhage in support from Labour’s
own former voters without attracting any new supporters.

Not only are they failing to asking survivors if the abuse has decreased (i.e. measuring the actual intended outcome), the cheap option of former perpetrators taking over courses from qualified practitioners seems to be giving abusers a cosy mens' group rather than changing behaviour.

An unlikely consensus

This is probably the part of the story where you’re thinking programme providers will righteously defend their own work.

That’s what I thought, too, when I rang Merran Lawler, chief executive officer of Te Kupenga Whakaoti Mahi Patunga, the National Network of Family Violence Services.

She found The Backbone Collective report “depressing reading, but also completely unsurprising”.

“At one level the report could be read as attacking the credibility and the viability of stopping violence services and programmes,” she says, “but it’s far more nuanced than that.”

She cites a key date: 2014, the year Programme Approval Panels were abolished. Made up of victim-survivor advocates, alongside organisations and experts in stopping violence, their job was to approve programme design and content.

Their abolition was a philosophical decision, Lawler says, and a financial one. “To get the cheapest possible services from a wider range of providers.

“It’s fair to say that it has resulted in the dumbing down of the sector. The safeguards were much better at the turn of the century than they are today."

Lawler argues there is now less focus on qualified facilitators, and more on lived-experience practitioners – people who formerly perpetrated violence.

“Groups of guys getting together and being able to share what’s happening for them, and removing any of the discomfort that necessarily goes with any type of behavioural change.”

And too often without their victims being asked if their abuser’s behaviour has actually changed at all.

It wasn't always a smooth journey, but it was a journey towards finding our place here. Hong Kong continued to exist in our lives and our identity, but it was just our place of origin. It was our past. New Zealand was our present and our future.
As I grew up and drifted into journalism and writing in the early 2000s, I found myself fighting for our place. Behind every claim that 'Asians were doing all the crimes' or 'Asians were buying all the houses' was an unspoken belief that white Pākeha New Zealanders doing crimes or buying all the houses was normal and accepted - a sort of customary right - but Asian New Zealanders doing the same things violated the conditions of our citizenship. As if our citizenship was probationary and had to be earned continuously.
In many ways, those of us in that cohort (including fellow author in this book Tze Ming Mok) were in a generational sweet spot. We were old enough to be taken seriously, but young enough to be reckles. Our families had been here long enough for us to be culturally fluent, but not so long as to have the baggage that came with having to survive and prosper in a more racist past.

I bought myself a $6.50 bakery department cake from the supermarket and plated it to look fancy for my birthday out on my rural section yesterday, it was actually so good that rainbows blasted out of my head as per the next picture
