Letta argues for creating a European Security Union with the UK, Norway and others, to start "the rebuilding of an institutional bridge with the 27". This is the place to focus because "on defence you don't have the single market".

Our first session after lunch is Enrico Letta in conversation with Simon Fraser. Letta calls Brexit a "tragedy" for EU capital markets reform. "Today it would be a totally different world. 28 financial markets integrated in one. With London on the same level as New York City."

Anthony Gooch-Gálvez: "The most important partner for European business is the United Kingdom. Over 70% of our members say it is the partner which should be given top priority. But that means much more than SPS. We need to recast the level of ambition."

Ignacio García Bercero @bruegel.org: "I don't think it is going to be possible for the EU to agree on more single market-type agreements, like mutual recognition of conformity assessments, if the UK is not willing to revisit its red line on freedom of movement."

Amanda Brooks (DBT): "What are the three things I hear most from British businesses, in terms of building on the TCA? Short term business mobility and recognition of professional qualifications. Mutual recognition of goods. And what we can do together on economy security and resilience."
