There’s a black patch over his right eye where allergies caused him to scratch too much. The fur is just starting to grow back, but the black ring around his eye is quite prominent and gives him the look of a dog named Patches. He is prancing along the neat grey planks of a bridge. Shadows fall sharply across the rusted bridge rails, striping the X-reinforcements in thin sunshine stripes. Thick green trees shake their summer leaves in the background.

A tissue-thin orange and gold leaf floats gracefully on the smooth mirror of a stream. The leaf upturns sharply on the sides, as much like a boat as a leaf can manage. The tip of the leaf stretches upward and curls inward, looking for all the world like a ship’s figurehead. At the back, the leaf stem arches delicately toward the water, delightfully suggestive of a rudder. Every ripple and vein of the leaf is perfectly reflected in the water. The sun’s brightest gleams stretch across the center of the leaf in two curves. Reflected, the four curves suggest a bright butterfly, with the surrounding leaf as a cocoon. The unexpectedness of this image is enhanced by the leaf’s surroundings. In the water’s reflection, the leaf is entirely surrounded by the bright and dark greens of healthy summer leaves. Here and there, the reflections fade, allowing a glimpse of a rock-strewn, summery streambed. Surrounded by summer heat, shaded by summer leaves, the autumn butterfly dreams in its cocoon, waiting for frost’s chill to weaken its protective husk.

Two swallows captured in mid-flight, one posed above the other. The bottom swallow rises vertically from the middle of the frame, belly angled toward the camera, white throat shining in the sunlight. Its wings are bent downward and toward the left in mid-beat. The shadow of the right wing falls on the feathers of the left. Its dark beak rises sharply, pointing toward the uppermost swallow. The uppermost swallow dives downward, its beak pointed down toward the bottom swallow. The two beaks are nearly perfectly aligned. The wings of the uppermost swallow extend upward in a sharp V-shape. Individual wing feathers are sharp and distinct against the clear blue sky. The tail of the uppermost bird is pointed toward the camera and angled from high on the left to low on the right as the swallow dives. The swallow’s body curves downward in a graceful arc toward the lower swallow. Color variations are harder to see on the uppermost swallow, which appears black and slate-gray due to the sun’s angle, but the paler throat can be distinguished from the dark beak.

I am loving this colorway. The recycled sari silk makes spinning this roving a bit of a negotiation, which is great for mindfulness. A mix of blue-faced Leicester, mulberry silk, and recycled sari silk by Keirawxyz.

Freshly spun yarn on a spinning wheel bobbin. The base color is midnight blue, with gorgeous pops of purple and livened by tiny flecks of red, green, and yellow.

Slate-blue waves churn to white foam over pale green as they reach the rocks in this seacoast photograph. White rivulets stream over the every dark, seaweed-covered rock. The white foam stands out so sharply against some of these dark rocks that you can make out individual drops. Down at the bottom of the frame, a seagull flies low, slipping between the rocks. The blur of movement and position creates an optical illusion that suggests that the gray-white wings of the seagull are formed of the gray-white water itself, with the seagull’s white neck and yellow beak improbably rising from the waves. The peaceful slate-blue ripples of the deeper ocean set a strangely calm tone for a scene of such churning activity.

A single sharp-petaled blue flower blooms from the tip of a thin grasslike stem. The diminutive, delicate blue-eyed grass is a member of the iris family. The flower's six pale blue petals are enlivened by dark blue streaks which lead the eye to the yellow-cupped heart of the flower. A tiny tangle of bright yellow sepals reaches out from the heart of the flower. Each of the flower's six petals sweeps around in a broad curve interrupted by a tiny, sharp tip extending from the center of the curve. A slight fuzz can be seen on the edges of each of the petals.

Someone (I wish I could recall who) recently posted a link to a no-knead “peasant bread” baked in Pyrex mixing bowls: alexandracooks.com/2012/11/07/m... Having time and tools, I tried it. I used whole wheat flour only (always, for everything…) They came out beautifully and taste great. Pass it on!
