#OTD in 1943, K-74 became the only U.S. blimp lost to enemy action when it was shot down by German submarine U-134 in the Straits of Florida. The crew survived except for one sailor who died after being attacked by a shark. U-134 was sunk a month later by HMS Rother.

#OTD in 1969, a Honduran Corsair shot down two Salvadoran Corsairs and a Mustang during the "Football War". It was the last dogfight between piston engine fighters. The U.S. Navy had retired the F4U Corsair in 1953. The Honduran Air Force continued to fly the F4U until 1979.

#OTD in 1913, Gerald Ford was born (as Leslie Lynch King, Jr.). Prior to becoming the 38th president of the United States, Ford served as an officer in the U.S. Navy during WWII. The aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN-78) is named in his honor.

#OTD in 1976, USS Constitution fired a 21-gun salute in honor of Elizabeth II as as she arrived in Boston on board the Royal Yacht Britannia. The Queen then toured "Old Ironsides" and was presented with a miniature sea chest made from oak recovered during the ship's restoration.

#OTD in 1953, Maj. John Bolt shot down two MiGs while flying an F-86E Sabre to become the only U.S. Marine to achieve ace status in two wars and the only Marine jet fighter ace. During WWII, he became an ace as a VMF-214 "Black Sheep". He had 12 total victories during his career.

#OTD in 1926, Fred Gwynne was born. Gwynne served as a radioman 3rd class on a submarine chaser in the Pacific during WWII before attending Harvard and pursuing an acting career. His most notably roles were as Herman Munster on THE MUNSTERS and the judge in MY COUSIN VINNY.

#OTD in 1952, USS Sea Poacher (SS-406) performed a unique submarine-to-airship rescue when it towed the disabled K-86 blimp and its 10-man crew for 40 miles to NAS Key West.

#OTD in 1943, the Fletcher-class destroyer USS Strong sank in the Kula Gulf after being struck by a torpedo from the spread fired 13 miles away by Japanese destroyer Niizuki. It is believed to be the longest successful torpedo shot in history. Forty-six men were lost.

#OTD in 1986, a Marine mechanic stole an A-4M Skyhawk for a 45 minute joyride during which time he performed several aerobatic maneuvers. He had wanted to be a fighter pilot but an injury prevented him from qualifying. His stunt cost him four months in the brig.

#OTD in 1982, HMS Conqueror arrived in Scotland while flying a Jolly Roger to signify the sub's successful operations during the Falklands War. The flag featured a silhouette of a cruiser representing ARA General Belgrano which had been torpedoed and sunk by Conqueror on 2 May.

#OTD in 1944, USS Mercury was attacked by a Japanese torpedo bomber that clipped the ship's cargo boom and cartwheeled into the sea. It was the first and only boom in the Navy to be credited with downing an enemy plane. A victory mark was painted on it by the ship's winchmen.

#OTD in 1942, the Grumman F6F Hellcat flew for the first time. The F6F would become the most successful Navy fighter of WWII, with Hellcat pilots claiming 5,163 victories and a 19:1 kill-to-loss ratio.
