Congressman Juan Vargas
@vargas
Proudly representing the people of south San Diego County in the U.S. House of Representatives. Former CA State Senator, Assembly Member, and SD City Council Member.
Thank you to everyone who joined my telephone town hall last week with Supervisor Paloma Aguirre. Together, we discussed the urgent issue of pollution in the Tijuana River and federal and local efforts to combat it.
Our landmark housing affordability bill passed both the House and Senate. But Trump is refusing to sign it into law. I guess he realized there's nothing in it that personally benefits him, just help for families struggling with costs. He needs to sign it now. No more delays.
Today, this extremist Supreme Court gave Trump the green light to strip away temporary protected status from hundreds of thousands of people who cannot safely return to their home countries. TPS holders registered with the government, passed background checks, and trusted the process.
Happy Father's Day to all the dads and father figures across CA-52. Out of all the titles I've had, Dad is the best one.
Today marks 14 years of DACA. Dreamers strengthen our communities, contribute to our economy, and have built their lives here. As Trump continues to attack DACA, we must provide permanent protections and a pathway to citizenship for Dreamers. #HomeIsHere #ProtectDreamers
Happy Pride! This month, as we celebrate the resilience and enormous achievements of the LGBTQI+ community, we also reaffirm our commitment to fight for justice and equality for all.
During National Small Business Month, I was glad to honor Fernando Covarrubias and Priscilla Curiel, owners of Mujer Divina Burrito & Coffee House, as our May Constituents of the Month.
This week, I joined my colleagues in a moment of silence for the three victims of the horrific shooting at the Islamic Center of San Diego. (1/3)
Happy Mother’s Day to my incredible mom and to all the amazing mothers across CA-52! Today, we celebrate you and all that you do for our families. Wishing you all a joyful Mother’s Day 💐!
Glad to recognize Joe Garbanzos as our April Constituent of the Month during National Volunteer Month. Joe is the State President of AARP California and the Director of Southern California Region for Filipino Veterans Recognition and Education Project in addition to many other volunteer roles.
Last night, Senate Republicans voted to give ICE another $70 BILLION to continue Trump’s mass deportation agenda. If this comes to the House floor, I will vote NO. No blank checks for ICE.
Today I joined Senator Hirono, Senator Padilla, and student advocates to speak out against Trump’s plan to completely cut funding for these programs at hundreds of colleges and universities.
Today, we forced a vote to extend Temporary Protected Status for Haiti. It just passed the House. The 350,000+ Haitian nationals who contribute greatly to our communities deserve protections. This is a huge win. Now, on to the Senate.
CA-52 Students: Remember to enter the 2026 Congressional Art Competition by Friday, April 17th for a chance to have your work showcased in the Capitol. This year's theme: "Our Digital Reality" Visit my website to learn more: vargas.house.gov/services/congressional-art-competition
This is appalling rhetoric from a sitting president. Suggesting that the US will commit war crimes and wipe out an entire civilization is madness.
I’m glad to recognize Karen Azhocar McManus as our Constituent of the Month during Women’s History Month!
The allegations against César Chávez are horrific. I unequivocally stand with the survivors and commend the bravery of everyone who has come forward to share their story.
No voy a asistir al discurso del Estado de la Unión de Trump esta noche. Estos son los motivos⬇️
I will not be attending Trump's State of the Union address today. Here's why ⬇️
Disgusting bigotry. This kind of hate has no place in Congress, or anywhere else. Shame on Randy Fine, and shame on my Republican colleagues who have continued to stay silent on this.
Esta semana realizamos una audiencia sobre los abusos cometidos por ICE, donde familias y comunidades compartieron historia tras historia sobre cómo fueron acosadas y aterrorizadas por esta agencia que no respeta la ley.
Today, we held a hearing on ICE's abuses where families and communities share story after story of their experiences being targeted and terrorized by this lawless agency. Block DHS funding. Impeach Kristi Noem. Get ICE out of our cities now. This violence cannot continue.
I was blocked from entering Otay Mesa Detention Center today to conduct oversight after receiving concerning allegations about conditions there. We've heard reports that detainees are throwing notes over the fences asking for help. What are they trying to hide here? What are they doing?
HAPPENING NOW: I'm at Otay Mesa Detention Center after hearing very concerning reports about conditions here. Members of Congress have the legal right to enter immigrant detention facilities to conduct oversight with no advance notice. I'm here to do that.
Today, I voted NO on DHS funding and joined my colleagues at ICE headquarters to demand Kristi Noem be impeached. ICE has terrorized our communities. This violence and abuse of power needs to end now.
HAPPENING NOW: I’m at ICE headquarters with fellow Democrats to send one simple message: Kristi Noem must go. Impeach Noem. Get ICE out of our communities.
No funding for a rogue ICE. Impeach Kristi Noem. Get ICE out of our communities NOW.
I had the chance to visit Pope Francis Center, a new immigrant resource center from Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish that will provide legal aid, spiritual support and child care to immigrants and families. Our community continues to stand up for our neighbors and against the brutality of Trump's DHS.
