Synthetic Biology with a Southern European flavour for a new partnership with the Living World
All you wished to know about the trials & tribulations of releasing engineered microorganisms in the EU territory for bioremediation and other non-contained applications … quite nightmarish, to be frank … it needs to change … and soon! links.springernature.com/f/a/RIKWp_8O...
For an update in real time (thanks @grodira.bsky.social for sharing) 👉🏻 xn--incendiosespaa-2nb.es
The Madrid region is burning. We have never witnessed wildfires on this scale here. This is both frightening & infuriating. We all knew that climate change would make these events more frequent & extreme. Prevention cannot be left to good luck or the hope that this year will somehow be different 😡
El caos de cercanías de @renfeoperadora.bsky.social en Madrid dura ya semanas 😵💫, llegar a la @uam.es es una odisea como la de la peli 👇
Cool sunglasses handed over by the @csic.es to all its employees to enjoy the full eclipse of August 12 through a wide strip of Spain’s geography. Manufactured in collaboration with www.fundaciononce.es/es 👏
Glad to see this article on eng plants for HCH biodegradation see the light after many years in the making. This work stems from a longstanding collaboration with the late Eduardo González-Pastor. The paper is dedicated to his memory enviromicro-journals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/....
Check out this Symposium at Rice Univ this Sept 18 www.bakerinstitute.org/event/synthe.... Much of the conversation will go into environmental applications of Synthetic Biology 👇
Last few weeks (deadline Aug 15) to apply for the upcoming Workshop Oct 25-29 at @cshlaboratory.bsky.social Asia in Suzhou on *Synthetic Microbiology Beyond Containment* www.csh-asia.org?content/3201. Exploring how to move from sexy experiments in the Lab to large-scale, real-world applications 😱!
Certainly! One of the most cherished photos of my album with scientific celebrities (Milano, 2010) 👇
1/2 En medio de las sensacionalistas noticias estos días sobre creación de células sintéticas, www.nytimes.com/interactive/..., el artículo de @nunodomin.bsky.social elpais.com/ciencia/2026... pone un poco de orden en el asunto.
The always inspiring morning walk to the @embl.org Heidelberg 😀
We were the *Black SEVATH* band, I wonder why @sevaplasmids.bsky.social … 🤔
All domains of life are connected through the invisible bond of the environmental microbiome. And microbes themselves make the connection to the abiotic setting. Humans are just one node in a dense ecological network. Beautiful visual depiction of these facts generated with AI 👇
I received wth great sadness the news of the passing of our dear friend & colleague Ana Clara Carrera. One of the most recognizable faces of the @cnb-csic.bsky.social for many years. Her enthusiasm & character touched all of us who had the fortune of crossing paths with her. May she rest in peace 🫶🏻
2/3 It has been many years since my last visit to Granada. I am looking forward to reconnecting with old friends and colleagues, revisiting places full of scientific memories, and celebrating the remarkable career of Juan Luis Ramos, whose work has left a lasting mark on our field 👏
1/3 What a week!Aachen ➡️ Madrid ➡️ Barcelona ➡️ Segovia ➡️ Granada. Every stop along the way has brought great encounters, stimulating discussions & inspiring events. Now off to Granada, one of the cradles of TOL plasmid research—a system that, despite decades of study, still keeps many secrets
Back to Segovia for the last retreat of my Lab, along with friends and colleagues from ETH, Univ Sevilla, DTU and Univ Valencia. Great science & amazing discussions in the unique venue of the historical Dominican Convent of Santa Cruz la Real, now @ieuniversity.bsky.social
Incomprensible ☹️
The best of the SynBio folk—at least at this side of the pond 😅—are the good vibes & the friendly/collaborative mood of every meeting. Discussions indeed everywhere. Thanks @taeseokmoon.bsky.social & @marcguellc.bsky.social for having made it possible. Here blowup talking to Aindrila Mukhopadhyay👇
Off to Barcelona for the 2nd SynBYSS Conf www.jcvi.org/events/synbyss organized by the one and only @taeseokmoon.bsky.social along with Marc Güell of @upf.edu & other local SynBio colleagues. Ready to take the pulse of the field & learn from many of its luminaries 😀. I will honor Gaudí in my talk 👇
Leaving behind the myth of the lab-built heroic strain for bioremediation & environmental recovery. Forefront SynBio-based research in large-scale env biotech needs to refocus on engineering ecological interactions www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti... @ricardsole.bsky.social @vmaull.bsky.social
Impressive tour of the Ruhrgebiet—the historic cradle of German industrialisation—guided by Lars Blank. Since the end of coal mining 20yr ago the region has undergone a deep transformation into a recreational & cultural landscape while keeping many monuments to its industrial past & former splendour
I am growingly convinced that GM bacteria for release as bioremediation agents must have a separate regulatory frame compared to other GM items, as their only purpose and moral value is doing good things for the society, the environment and helping restoring ecological balance 🤔
Excited & intrigued abt my 1st ever formal sortie away from the lab into the minefield of epistemological/philosophical matters. Nurturing in @core-rwth.bsky.social the idea that the way forward of Env Microbiol & SynBio is to incorporate feminist & non-Western perspectives. More later, stay tuned!
The time has come to move SYNBIO microbes outside the lab/fermentor & recognize them as powerful allies in repairing the env damage we have inflicted on the planet. Achieving this at a truly global scale demands fresh views beyond the very limited Western mindset of control and containment 👇
1/2 The regulatory labyrinth for commercialisation of GE bacteria for deliberate env release eg bioremediation, biofertilization or disease control in the EU. Note that each of the 27 member states must emit an opinion & a vote 😱. No wonder the field is altogether stagnant at this side of the pond ☹️
