Timeline cleanse - even this close to the start of the southern winter, on sunny days, we still see monarchs patrolling the garden 📷 @andyreisinger.bsky.social
Do I know any creatives on here who need extras or models? Lukas Reisinger (@elviskhaan on Youtube) is looking for work - check him out on JAM Talent share.google/1F6LZMbhEWWb...
With less than a third into the year, it was overshoot day for Aotearoa yesterday - the day when Earth's resources and services would have been used up if the whole world consumed as much
My current obsession with fungi of all sorts - the first harvest of these oyster mushrooms is in.
What happens to glaciers in New Zealand (and elsewhere) is up to us @drljv.bsky.social @clicwcrp.bsky.social
Congrats to @drljv.bsky.social for her award by the International Glaciology Society, presented this morning @clicwcrp.bsky.social
Not a single day in 2025 was cooler than the 1991-2020 average, on a global scale. @copernicusecmwf.bsky.social
I'm on a long break this summer - feeling lucky to be sailing into the night to spend some time in the top of the south
The time of (even more than usual) forest walks and ocean swims has arrived - this is Moko, an 800-year-old rimu at Ōtari Wilton's bush - all the best everyone
Have just ordered a couple of these "feral" fundraiser t-shirts to support PATHAs legal costs in their resistance against the ban on puberty blockers for trans kids. cradlednz.digitees.co.nz/shop/categor...
Over the past few weeks, I've spent time with groups working to restore Te Awarua o Porirua, or Porirua Harbour, once a plentiful food basket for Ngāti Toa. Full story on RNZ's Our Changing World later this week - images from cockle survey
Just spent two nights at Wellington Hospital with appendicitis and had the most amazing care, from the ambulance driver and paramedic to nursing staff, orderlies, anaesthetists and surgeons - some of the best people work in hospitals - glad the thing is out
Happy Antarctica Day! On December 1 in 1959, 12 nations signed the Antarctic Treaty, which established #Antarctica as a "natural reserve, devoted to peace and science". Images from my season with @swais2c.bsky.social - good luck for this season!
Timeline cleanse for a little naturing - we live next door to a huge kowhai tree and this is one of a dozen kākā that come to feast on its blooms each morning and evening
This image says it all - delegates failed to agree on an international treaty to stop plastic pollution, including in the ocean
I'm late to @romankrznaric.bsky.social's History for Tomorrow (published last year), but the book has found me just as I'm realizing how revitalising and effective collective community action is #CommunalDemocracy
For my science column in this week's Listener, I talked to polar governance expert Alan Hemmings about the #Antarctic Treaty, geopolitics and emperors 🐧 current issue in shops now, online soon 🌎🇦🇶
And it looks like most climate-related monitoring work is gone, including at Mauna Loa and the South Pole
I've been working on a story about the impacts of the Trump administration on the science sector here, which meant following US budget proposals like this one for @noaa.gov - it's a litany of terminations and cuts. E.g. a third less to protect turtles and whales, but more for fisheries 🧵
In a hurry to get a feed in the ocean - this was in January when Adelies are in the middle of their breeding season and spend long periods on their nest
Thanks for organising! This footage of Adelies in a hurry is from my last Antarctic field work 18 months ago - #Antarctica and the Southern Ocean are my constant reminders of the importance of the ocean #OceanChat
My most recent dive/snorkel was earlier this year - heartbreaking to see the damage to the southern end of the Great Barrier reef #OceanChat
Another set of stripes - this time on ocean acidification. The lower the pH, the more acidic the ocean - in this case the Pacific, which is 20% more acidic than it was 50 years ago, by Nicolas Gruber & Luke Gregor ETH Zürich oceanacidificationstripes.info
It's #ShowYourStripes today - this is Aotearoa New Zealand, warming fast like so many other places. To find your stripes, check out @edhawkins.org's fantastic work
Here's Kate Newton (with her tardigrade) and finalists @kategevans.bsky.social and @michelleduff.bsky.social
WorldOceanDay is every day - here are some moments from a bittersweet visit to an island in the southern Great Barrier Reef. We saw green sea turtles lay eggs and younglings hatch - but most corals were gone
April 30, only four months into the year, it's ##OvershootDay for Aotearoa. If everyone lived like we do here, Earth's ecological services and resources would be exhausted now
Timeline cleanse - it's another one of those beautiful autumn days in Whanganui-a-tara, and the Saturday market was where half our neighborhood gathered this morning
Spent the last two days at some of my favourite places - Ōtari Wilton's bush and Te Papa - with a team saving our rarest orchid species; story coming soon
