Some thoughts on crime by someone

A small pamphlet being held by a brown skinned hand. The title is, “The usefulness of crime” under which is an image of a large old timey keying with many keys hanging. The author is Karl Marx.

Text on the first page of a book that reads: A PHILOSOPHER PRODUCES IDEAS, a poet poems, a clergyman sermons, a professor compendia and so on. A criminal produces crimes. If we look a little closer at the connection between this latter branch of production and society as a whole, we shall rid ourselves of many prejudices. The criminal produces not only crimes but also criminal law, and with this also the professor who gives lectures on criminal law and in addition to this the inevitable compendium in which this same professor throws his lectures onto the general market as 'commodities'. This brings with it augmentation of national wealth, quite apart from the personal enjoyment which-as a competent Witness, Herr Professor Roscher, [tells] us-the manuscript of the compendium brings to its originator himself.

The story is part of a series of stories inspired by museum exhibits and is inspired by two works in particular. The first the is A Slight and Pleasing Dislocation by Shazia Sikander that was commissioned for a NYC Law Firm and then withdrawn after 9/11 www.themorgan.org/exhibitions/...

Had the most incredible Sunday walk learning about black women of Greenwich Village led by @prisonculture.bsky.social!. I am amazed and mortified by Billie Holiday‘s life and what this country did to her. Went to the Stonewall visitor center after and I got to play ‘strange fruit’ on the jukebox.

This is especially sad cause 0.39% is an even smaller percent than Eric Adams gave libraries in his FY 2026 prelim budget. I know this isn't the end of the budget process but we have got to end this dance of will the mayor won't he for a vital pillar of learning, community, and life in the city.
