Is it real
or am I living a dream
is this great metropolis, Chicago?
I am amazed, I am humbled
by the awesome beauty of the city,
beauty even in the ugly.
It's so complex:
beauty in architectural structures,
ugliness in the decay of once proud buildings.
As I stroll in the Loop
I see such a contrast -
the wealthy, the middle class, the homeless
on State Street, Michigan Avenue -
a woman in her sable fur,
the battered woman pushing a grocery cart
filled with her worldly possessions,
wearing two or three dresses, several jackets
and a tattered coat,
shoes old and several sizes too large.
Now look over there at Buckingham Fountain -
Isn't it beautiful?
Travel north to the endless beaches of Lake Michigan.
Now look back
ah, the beauty of the skyline,
skyscrapers overwhelm the sky
piercing low-lying clouds with tenderness.
Michigan Avenue, the million-dollar mile,
the Gold Coast, Lake Shore Drive,
home of the privileged wealthy.
Travel south to Maxwell Street,
the poor man's Marshall Field's.
Cottage Grove, decaying brownstone buildings,
tenements, housing projects.
Look east: Chicago Art Institute, Soldiers Field,
Field Muscum, Shedd Aquarium,
Museum of Science and Industry, Navy Pier.
The sun shines on the multitude of
swimmers, sunbathers,
all shapes, all sizes, all colors,
gorgeous tans, brick-red sunburns.
In winter, harsh winds blowing away whiteheaded waves,
assaulting the beach with fury.
As I walk down the street I play
a game with myself.
I walk with my head down.
Took at people's feet.

It’s eugenics. It’s all, always, eugenics. Deployed against more and more groups of people the longer it’s tolerated by the public.

Most are unaware that the 1918 flu
pandemic killed an estimated 50 million people - more than died in the First World War. The uncontrolled pandemic fueled an increasing emphasis on the pseudoscience of eugenics, the idea that humans can improve their gene pool by facilitating the breeding of "desirables" and preventing the reproduction of "undesirables."

The inherent logic of eugenics is that some people are worth less than others, and thus deserve to be sacrificed. The 1918 flu
pandemic facilitated widespread acceptance of this calculation. Eugenic legislation increased in the years that followed, including forced sterilization laws in several American states.

This whole scenario is atrocious, and unconscionable:

Meeting participants, about 20 in all, repeatedly returned to what they viewed as the most urgent need: life-saving emotional support for people who have expressed suicidal ideation.

"That is something I hear from my youth and something I hear from parents, especially fathers," one advocate said, explaining that some in the latter group feel like they can't let their family down.

Which Eggs Were Recalled?

The affected eggs were produced and distributed between June 6 and July 3, 2026, with sell-by or best-by dates ranging from July 20 through August 17, 2026. They were sent to foodservice and retail customers in Texas, Oklahoma, and Louisiana.

Consumers may have purchased the eggs at Kroger stores in Texas and Louisiana, as well as Brookshire Grocery stores in Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, and Mississippi. The FDA says the eggs were also sold at other smaller retail outlets.

There are so many horrific things that have happened - and continue to happen - but this one haunts me so fucking deeply.

The death of a nearly blind refugee from Myanmar who was found on a Buffalo street in February — five days after Border Patrol agents left him at a doughnut shop — has been ruled a homicide, authorities said Wednesday.
The Erie County Medical Examiner's Office didn't reach any conclusions about responsibility for Nurul Amin Shah Alam's death, which the agency said was caused by complications of a perforated duodenal ulcer, precipitated by hypothermia and dehydration.
Ruling a death a homicide means it resulted from another person's actions - or inaction - but doesn't necessarily mean that a crime was committed.
"This should not have happened," Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz, a Democrat, said at a news conference Wednesday, expressing condolences to Shah Alam's family.

Trans rights are human rights. You should care about this because you care about other people. But if you can’t reach even that bar and are only driven by self-preservation, you should care about this because they won’t stop with trans rights.

Now HHS, along with several other federal agencies, has even exceeded what the Defending Women executive order asked for.
In at least 6o instances, the government removed data on people's sexual orientation, which the order did not cover. "There is a sense of over-complying," Klein says. And though the rate of removals has slowed as agencies run out of gender-related data to target, "there are still requests coming in to carry out the implementation of that executive order."

Trump's minions, that is, have kept up the search, sometimes circling back to further scrub massive datasets involving civil rights complaints and clinical trials. At this point, though, even the experts are not entirely sure how much gender data remains for the administration to sniff out. We may not know until it's gone.

Today, civil rights leader Dolores Huerta issued the following statement:
"I am nearly 96 years old, and for the last 60 years have kept a secret because I believed that exposing the truth would hurt the farmworker movement I have spent my entire life fighting for.
I have encouraged people to always use their voice. Following the New York Times' multi-year investigation into sexual misconduct by Cesar Chavez, I can no longer stay silent and must share my own experiences.
As a young mother in the 1960s, I
experienced two separate sexual encounters with Cesar. The first time I was manipulated and pressured into having sex with him, and I didn't feel I could say no because he was someone that I admired, my boss and the leader of the movement I had already devoted years of my life to. The second time I was forced, against my will, and in an environment where I felt trapped.

I had experienced abuse and sexual violence before, and I convinced myself these were incidents that I had to endure
alone and in secret. Both sexual encounters with Cesar led to pregnancies. I chose to keep my pregnancies secret and, after the children were born, I arranged for them to be raised by other families that could give them stable lives.
Over the years, I have been fortunate to develop a deep relationship with these children, who are now close to my other children, their siblings. But even then, no one knew the full truth about how they were conceived until just a few weeks ago.
I carried this secret for as long as I did because building the movement and securing farmworker rights was my life's work. The formation of a union was the only vehicle to accomplish and secure those rights and I wasn't going to let Cesar or anyone else get in the way. I channeled everything I had into advocating on behalf of millions of farmworkers and others who were suffering and deserved equal rights.

I have never identified myself as a victim, but I now understand that I am a survivor - of violence, of sexual abuse, of domineering men who saw me, and other women, as property, or things to control.
I am telling my story because the New York Times has indicated that I was not the only
one - there were others. Women are coming forward, sharing that they were sexually abused and assaulted by Cesar when they were girls and teenagers.
The knowledge that he hurt young girls sickens me. My heart aches for everyone who suffered alone and in silence for years.
There are no words strong enough to condemn those deplorable actions that he did. Cesar's actions do not reflect the values of our community and our movement.
The farmworker movement has always been bigger and far more important than any one individual. Cesar's actions do not diminish the permanent improvements achieved for farmworkers with the help of thousands of people. We must continue to engage and support our community, which needs advocacy and activism now more than ever.

I will continue my commitments to workers, as well as my commitment to women’s rights, to make sure we have a voice and that our communities are treated with dignity and given the equity that they have so long been denied.
I have kept this secret long enough. My silence ends here.”

A family friend, Frederick B. Snite, Jr. was the picture of health before contracting polio at the age of 25. Thanks to his family’s immense wealth and a bit of sheer luck, he had access to the best available treatment for the remaining 18.5 years of his life, which he lived to the fullest.

I’m not seeing anything in the linked article about the man’s (lack of) criminal history, but this woman’s death was still entirely egregiously unnecessary:

"We have a no chase policy, and the no-chase policy is to help protect our citizens more than it is anything else. So there may have been a different way to corner the individual so that he could not run, or that he could not cause the accident that took the life of Dr. Davis."
CCPD Chief Jeff Hadley offered his condolences to Davis' family, saying her death was likely preventable.

"Condolences to the Davis family, Savannah Chatham public schools, and anyone that's affected by this. As the Chairman stated, this is really unfortunate and more than likely, preventable," Hadley says.

“Once pregnant children are placed at the San Benito shelter, the new regulations could mean they cannot be moved out of Texas to get abortions - even if keeping them there puts them at risk. “It's so elegant and simple,’ White said. ‘All they have to do is send them to Texas.’”

"This is 100% and exclusively about abortion," said Jonathan White, a longtime federal health official who ran ORR's unaccompanied children program for part of President Donald Trump's first term. White, who recently retired from the government, said the administration tried and failed to restrict abortion access for unaccompanied minors in 2017. "Now they casually roll out what they brutally fought to accomplish last time and didn't."

Asked via email why the administration is sending pregnant children to San Benito, an HHS spokesperson who asked not to be named wrote that "ORR's placement decisions are guided by child welfare best practices and are designed to ensure each child is housed in the safest, most developmentally appropriate setting, including for children who are pregnant or parenting."

Scott Lloyd, the agency's director at the time, denied girls in ORR custody permission to end their pregnancies, court records show.
Lloyd also required the girls to get counseling about the benefits of motherhood and the harms of abortion and personally pleaded with some of them to reconsider.

Like other experts who spoke with the newsrooms, White, the former head of ORR's unaccompanied children program, said he thinks the San Benito directive and the antiabortion rule change are meant to work hand in hand: Once pregnant children are placed at the San Benito shelter, the new regulations could mean they cannot be moved out of Texas to get abortions - even if keeping them there puts them at risk.

Today is different. I'm crying, and as a human being I need everyone to know what ICE started doing yesterday, so we can stop them.
ICE calls it 'binary choice'. Really, it's Sophie's Choice.

There are still families in ICE camps.
Mostly mothers locked up with their children.
It's crowded. It's dirty. It's dangerous.
These mothers are terrified they and their children are going to get sick and die.
ICE could just set them free. Here's what they're doing instead.

ICE is giving mothers this 'binary choice:
Option 1: You and your child stay locked in ICE detention indefinitely.
Hope & pray that you both survive
COVID.
Option 2: Save your child's life by giving them up. You stay locked up, but ICE send your kid to live with someone else.

Maybe ICE will send your child to live with a friend or relative. Maybe ICE will put your child up for adoption.
Maybe you'll see your child again.
Maybe not.

And I am in absolute awe of this woman’s bravery:

As Watson questioned agents about warrants and the legality of their raid, neighbors pleaded with her to be quiet for her own safety. She refused to back down.

"You claim you have warrants, but do you have a warrant to seize the entire building?" she asked the agents. "Do you have warrants to detain the entire building?" According to Watson, two federal agents told her that they were taking all detainees' photos to check them against databases for visas or warrants.

When Watson walked around the block to capture footage of the ongoing raid, she noticed federal agents were using the parking lots of Excel South Shore Academy—a CPS contractor school— to load residents into vans. In them, Watson saw Black U.S. citizens, women, and children. Grabbed from their beds, they hadn't been allowed to dress themselves before they were zip-tied and brought down to the waiting vans.

ICIRR is still trying to determine the identities of all the people detained in the raid. Castro said that the organization usually can do that by following up with family members or loved ones. "In this instance, there was nobody left to work with," she said. The only detainee name they're sure of is that of a person who passed their Venezuelan passport to a neighbor as they were being taken away.

The hypocrisy of the left when it comes to the idea of “following the science” is truly staggering.

What's odd about the political climate surrounding forever COVID is that I really don't see what the counterargument is against the idea that we should stop infecting children with a brain damaging virus. Reactions online seem to be simple disbelief that COVID damages brains- but this is anti-science. The science is clear. However, today we still have a hegemonic refusal to acknowledge COVID as a threat- from the far-right to the far-left, it is a largely united front to treat COVID as the cold it is so clearly not.

DHS reported that the officer who opened fire had been "seriously injured" during the encounter. But body-worn camera footage first obtained by the Sun-Times shows that he described his injuries as "nothing major" shortly after the shooting.

There’s a LOT packed into this short video. But one thing my brain got snagged on, that I can’t seem to get past, is this choice of optics for a politician who is the head of the House Republicans:

A woman is captured mid-speech. I didn’t mean to grab an unflattering pic, but I certainly don’t care enough about her to fix it. Her blond hair is cut into a bob and dark at the roots, she wears a pink shirt and pearl stud earrings, and she’s positioned in front of windows with lace curtains drawn back and blinds down but open. Greenery is visible outside the windows. The only thing that could make the background and styling look more “suburban mom” would be a well-positioned pic of some kids.

The chyron identifies the screenshot as being from CBS News Chicago, and the woman as Rep. Tony McCombe, (R) House Minority Leader. The video quality is poor and somewhat pixelated, suggesting a slow internet connection.

Watching children play in Crown Fountain is one of my favorite downtown pastimes. The only thing these families should be worried about is how they’re going to appease a toddler who’s stuck in soaking wet clothes for the rest of the afternoon after they splish-splashed around so gleefully.

Chavez and her two children are now confined to a room at O'Hare International Airport, awaiting transfer to a detention facility in Texas before deportation to Guatemala, she said.

There are no detention centers in Illinois, which has forbidden local jails from holding ICE detainees under the state's Way Forward Act. Neither ICE or the U.S. Department of Homeland Security could immediately be reached for comment.

After the family was taken into custody, they were brought to the ICE processing center in west suburban Broadview where officials demanded they sign a voluntary departure document, Chavez said. But she and her husband refused to sign anything. She and her children were then taken to O'Hare; her husband remains in Broadview.

I have never in my life wanted short hair, but my immediate response to seeing this is “compulsory adherence to outdated gender norms” and it makes me want to cut all my hair off purely out of spite.
