Steels in place in the renovation of the 3rd Pavilion block at James Sellar’s (former) Victoria Infirmary, Glasgow. Sellar’s 1888 impression of the completed Infirmary. He did not live to see it completed dying of blood poisoning an injury sustained at the Glasgow International Exhibition 1888.

A relatively rare George VII pistol box on Old Castle Road, Old Cathcart, Glasgow. This one is pre-1905 given its design and having the mark of the Handyside foundry. More on ALT.

Red postbox on side of Old Castle Road, Glasgow - has the cypher GRVII of front and marked Handyside Foybdry.

The Scottish industrialist Andrew Handyside purchased the Britannia Iron Works in Derby in 1848. Under his leadership, the company gained international acclaim for the exceptional quality of its cast iron, producing everything from railway bridges and station structures to ornamental vases.

The foundry became a key contractor for the General Post Office (GPO), beginning its work with post boxes in 1855. Their reputation for high-quality, durable ironwork made them the natural choice for the mass production of the iconic pillar box.

The company continued to thrive long after Andrew Handyside's death in 1887, under the management of Colonel Alexander Buchan. However, the firm eventually went into liquidation around 1931. A successor company, Derby Castings Ltd, emerged to take over operations, though it ceased trading just two years later in 1933

Another overlooked gem - this time on the former Royal Bank of Scotland building (off Buchanan Street). ‘Medieval Masons at Work’ was commissioned by the Incorporation of Masons of Glasgow and is the work Colin McCougan Erected in the autumn of 1998

The stone carving on the north side of the former Royal Bank of Scotland building

It is the work of stonemason
Colin McCougan from Girvan, who graduated from The Glasgow College of Buildng and Printing (now part of The City of Glasgow College) as the top stonemasonry student in 1966.

The carving depicts that part of the silk frieze in the Grand Hall of the Trades Hall. The silk frieze depicts the work of all the individual trades and was manufactured in Belgium in the nineteenth century.

Often overlooked and/or stood on to view the Glasgow (in)famous traffic cone is this piece of sculpture by New York artist Lawrence Weiner installed in the paving around the GoMA in 2014 - more in ALT

Rounded corner section of pavement and steps with the phrase ALONG THE WAY/ COME WHAT MAY, SOMEWHERE/ SOMEHOW.

This commission for the Gallery of Modern Art (GoMA) is the only publicly-sited artwork by Lawrence Weiner in Scotland. It is the first public artwork commissioned by Glasgow Museums for GoMA since it opened in 1996.

Typically working with language, Weiner uses the phrase, 'ALONG THE WAY/ COME WHAT MAY, SOMEWHERE/ SOMEHOW' for the piece. These are set into the stone step surrounding GoMA and its entrance. This step puts the gallery onto a shallow plinth, creating a space for sitting, meeting and conversation.

Weiner wrote a text about this work stating that 'art is not a metaphor… [people use art to create metaphors] in relation to their own needs and desires. The use of a public art gallery as the plinth for a sculpture… [allows] the public to do [what they want] with [it] as they may.’

Through the placement and content of COME WHAT MAY, SOMEWHERE SOMEHOW, a space is created for the public to respond to the idea of what a public art gallery is and how it is used.

…was born in Ayrshire, and was bred to the medical profession. He practised in London, and, having made a fortune, returned to Scotland, and buying part of Robert Crawford's lands of Langside in 1776, he built thereupon, from a plan of Robert Adam, what now forms a great part of the present house. NOTE - this may be why the Adam is credited with the design of the Mausoleum/Aisle

Semple describes it as "an elegant large modern house upon an eminence, three stories high, pavilion roofed, with a platform covered with lead; the house stands due east and west, the front is toward the north with office houses in form of a court; the main door is beautified with a large portico supported by two large square pillars arched over, upon which is a balluster and rail walk, and a pediment above."

In 1766 Thomas Brown married Martha, eldest daughter of George Bogle of Daldowie, by whom he had four sons and one daughter; he died in 1782, and was succeeded by his eldest son, George Brown.

Duncan Brown (1819-1897) was a talented amateur photographer whose work documented aspects of Glasgow life from the 1850s until the 1890s. From 1845 to 1862 he was employed as the janitor at the Glasgow School of Art, which was then a Government School of Design located at 116 Ingram Street.

CHURCH: probably by James Dempster, 1830-31, superceded by present church (completed 1929) on nearby side outwith churchyard. Only tower (roofless) and W gable now survive. Gothic with hood-moulded pointed-arched openings, some traceried, with wide-splayed ingoes - glazing destroyed; tower has 3 diminishing stages and diagonal buttresses, these pinnacled above crenellated parapets. Stugged ashlar with polished dressings. Blocked north-facing door has mask label-stops, corresponding South-facing opening contains surviving upper part of timber panel with painted inscription.

AISLES: (A) "The burial place of Thomas Brown of Langside and his family 1782" (inscribed), in the style of Robert Adam. Neo-classical; square-plan, with identical elevations each composed with wall-planes progressively recessed towards centre, and each having a round-arched opening (blind, except at S) set in a recessed margin, patera in spandrels, angle pilaster strips; inscription panel to S and bases of broken bases over angles. Polished yellow ashlar. Modern wrought-iron gate. Roofless (perhaps a dome or pyramidal roof was originally contemplated).

Great to see the front of the Egyptian Halls been uncovered once more. The view (RHS) on Union Place hasn’t been hidden so much in fact been a backdrop in films like The Running Man. Some interesting AGT details e.g. columns on windows. Can any of this be renovated?
