I keep coming back to this passage in Robert Nystrom's book Crafting Interpreters. We need more of this 🧡

Ever since I learned to program as a kid, I felt there was something magical about languages. When I first tapped out BASIC programs one key at a time I couldn't conceive how BASIC itself was made. Later, the mixture of awe and terror on my college friends' faces when talking about their compilers class was enough to convince me language hackers were a different breed of human-some sort of wizards granted privileged access to arcane arts. It's a charming image, but it has a darker side. I didn't feel like a wizard, so I was left thinking I lacked some inborn quality necessary to join the cabal. Though I've been fascinated by languages ever since I doodled made-up keywords in my school notebook, it took me decades to muster the courage to try to really learn them. That "magical" quality, that sense of exclusivity, excluded me. When I did finally start cobbling together my own little interpreters, I quickly learned that, of course, there is no magic at all. It's just code, and the people who hack on languages are just people. There are a few techniques you don't often encounter outside of languages, and some parts are a little difficult. But not more difficult than other obstacles you've overcome. My hope is that if you've felt intimidated by languages and this book helps you overcome that fear, maybe I'll leave you just a tiny bit braver than you were before. And, who knows, maybe you will make the next great language. Someone has to.

It’s about indicating tone and register. Texting someone “hello” vs “Hello” vs “Hello.” can have different impacts.

It’s not about laziness, by the way. Since people’s phones automatically capitalize the first letters of sentences they’re often going to extra effort to decapitalize things.

I highly recommend Because Internet by Gretchen McCulloch for more on the evolution of language on the Internet.

If you: 1) visit Oulu, Finland 2) enjoy occasionally eating meat 3) enjoy spicy food I highly recommend visiting Kauppuri5 for a burger and some of their hot sauces!

It's a beast of a feast! This burger has blown up, the buns are gone and the salad is all over the plate. With the title "butcher's salad", it's the wheatless version of their perhaps most famous burger (the butcher).

Ingredients in their own words: "Bacon, Beef patty, Over night braised pulled pork and roast beef, Cheddar cheese, salad bed with mustard vinaigrette, Red Onion, Kauppuri 5 BBQ Sauce".

In the background, there's a small bowl of fries and an unassuming-looking but terrifyingly terrific dip sauce based on Naga Morich, a chili pepper that once held the world championship title on spiciness. Incredible and incredibly hot, even for a chili enthusiast! Served with a tasteful glass of IPA.

The place looks a bit grungy, with hand-drawn art and signatures from people famous and ordinary scribbled all over the walls, and their outdoor sign has the motto "curing and getting hangovers since 2010".

If that sounds like an experience you'd like to try, maybe visit Oulu?
