Shit day but I have a passionfruit, orange, and pomegranate agua fresca and tortilla soup on the way so that's something
Everything is horrible but today I discovered the gas station milkshake. There's a freezer full of these cups, you pick your flavor, put it in a special machine and then you have a pretty good milkshake
I leave on an international business trip tomorrow. I wasn't going to take pics of my sign or the protest I am going to because I didn't want them on my phone on my way back in. But fuck that. I am an American and I have the right to free speech and freedom of assembly
Made me think of one of my favorite pieces of art in my house, bought for small enough $ that I could do it on a whim while having a soli beer and dinner while on a business trip to Santa Cruz. Saw the art, got the artist's email, arranged to take delivery at my hotel before I left the next day
Then I wandered through the galleries at the Timken - a small but excellent (and free!) art museum and finished with an ice tea from Panama 66 while I waited for the bells at noon
Had a lovely morning in Balboa Park. The rose garden is in bloom, there was a food festival at the international houses (the House of Turkiye allowed me to indulge my love of potato fried in dough - I don't know what phyllo rolls filled with seasoned potatoes are called but they were delicious!)
I had lunch with a friend today and we went looking for transgender mouse memes and there aren't many yet. People need to get busy. This was the best we found
Started my Christmas baking today! Today was recipes from my grandmother's - fudge from my Dad's mom, molasses crinkles from my mom's mom

I was glad to see that my textbook from the time I had to take biochemistry with med students confirmed I was right in the basics - cyanide keeps oxygen from binding to the heme in cytochrome
Never really could explain why I felt I should keep my textbooks but I use them more than I thought I would to refresh my memory so I can explain something to one of my kids
And now I am sitting in the shade at Panama 66, looking out at the sculpture garden, waiting for the noontime bell concert
It is hot here today so I took refuge for awhile in the Timken, a small art gallery that is free. They have a Kehinde Wiley portrait on display. It is displayed next to examples from some older great portrait painters, Ruebens and Rembrandt
And speaking of spending time outside my phone here's a sampling of what I did in the park today. The rose garden was beautiful, as usual

San Diegans! Drive east til you're out of the clouds and you can see the aurora! Horizon is faint magenta by eye and pretty amazing on your phone (photo from my daughter's nice phone - my crap phone couldn't capture it)
I have nothing useful or insightful to say about the news scrolling past on my timeline but I was at Balboa Park this evening and the rose garden is looking great right now
Got a later than usual start on my annual New Years beach walk so caught the sunset, too
