Former Austrian Diplomat, among other postings Ambassador to Cyprus, Israel and the USA. Now President & CEO of Salzburg Global - check us out, you'll like us 😊
Mein Gastkommentar in der Presse: "It's the oil, stupid" (diepresse.com/41182285). And the oil prize keeps rising and rising...
If nothing else, this is a huge disservice to the US-team. They played a strong tournament and are deservedly in the round of 16. Now they won't be remembered for the way they played, but for the unfair advantage they received. What a way to spoil a great World Championship... #RedCardSuspension
A moment that will go down in Austrian football history. Just when all hope was lost and seconds before the final whistle, Sasa Kalajdzic scores the goal that keeps us in the tournament & the Austrian hopes alive. A Hollywood thriller with a happy end!!
How it started (=regime change) and how it ends. Despite a clear military defeat - the regime is still standing - there's still (a) Khamenei in charge - money will flow into it's coffers - Lebanon is part of the deal Not bad for a country that is "completely defeated" (© Donald Trump)
"The Iran War was a disaster of historic proportions.....the Iranian regime remains in power, effectively controls access to the Strait of Hormuz, and retains its nuclear ambitions, know-how, and capabilities. The pending deal changes none of that." A scorching reckoning by @ivodaalder.bsky.social
Love this quote one of our participants just threw out: "In absolute governments the King is law. So in free countries the law ought to be king. And there ought to be no other" 250 years old, © Thomas Paine, but still relevant as hell!
Our current program @salzburgglobal.bsky.social. Sound relevant? We have amazing participants - former Supreme Court Justices, Legal Advisors of Ministries, senior and aspiring lawyers etc. - weighing in on these crucial questions. Bottom line: the rule of law is, alas, under serious attack.
Maybe it's time to move from 'strong condemnation' to taking action? How about those Taurus missiles that Ukraine has been asking for since 2023?
Pleasure to welcome @staceyabrams.com back to @salzburgglobal.bsky.social for our program on "How can Democracies Defend Themselves?". A topic that may have seemed superfluous only a few years back is highly relevant today. Whish it weren't, but it is.
The endorsement of Viktor Orban by the Trump administration - and by Vladimir Putin, for that matter - could hardly have been any stronger. But all of it seems to have mattered....very little
Can't say that I know nearly enough about Hungarian domestic politics. But I'm pretty sure that if an American Vice-President would be dispatched to Austria in a last minute effort to influence Austrian voters this would completely and utterly backfire
Now that this latest conflict seems to be over, a strong argument can be made that President Obama achieved more vis-a-vis Iran with his Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (e.g. strong monitoring & verification vs. nothing today) than President Trump did with his course of war & escalation
"Article 52 of the first additional protocol to the Geneva conventions prohibits attacks on civilian targets. It is on those grounds that the international criminal court has issued arrest warrants for Russians responsible for attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure" (ex @theguardian.com)
A sad day for human rights and frankly a sad day for Israel @haaretzcom.bsky.social
Meeting Nina Krushcheva @salzburgglobal.bsky.social not too long ago was a pleasure - I truly enjoyed our conversation. So being an analyst and keen observer of current developments makes her a "foreign agent"? I guess the truth hurts....
What looked like a political blunder begins to look like a pretty smart move..... ("no British prime minister has said no to an American President since Vietnam. This is a big deal") @theguardian.com
So the United States conducts massive bombing raids against Iran daily, sinks its Navy, eliminates its Supreme Leader but is not at war with Iran? Yeah, sure, that's so going to fly....
I know that's a bold prediction. But something tells me that this is an award that Donald J. Trump will never receive. Ever.
Another interesting analysis of the current developments in the Middle East by @hamidrezaaz.bsky.social 👇
Today's the perfect day to recognize the unbelievable bravery the Ukrainian people & leaders have displayed during the past four years. Would we be even half as brave in the same situation? I hope we never have to find out. And due to the Ukrainians and their sacrifice, we probably never will!
