Re-reading Taruskin's "Golden Age of Kitsch" (1994) and I kind of want to cry.
Again, underestimating the capacity of her fans to care about more than one thing ("extreme myopia"). She does not treat these "petty squabbles" as "uniquely worthy aesthetic subjects," just worthy aesthetic subjects. And yeah, I think the romantic troubles of women of whatever class are worthy.
This is a lot of unsupported assertions. Elevating mundane (usually romantic) problems to the level of the epic is what pop music does (generic or not). What evidence does he have that such elevations inure is to structural/intentional inequality? One could easily argue the opposite.
There's plenty to criticize about Taylor Swift, and the beginning is on target. But I take issue with this line of thinking. It dramatically and insultingly underestimates the emotional and intellectual capacity of her fans.

I'm a little uncomfortable with the implicit equation of "Jew" with "Israeli" in this line of thought. There's also nothing about Israel. That being said, there is *also* nothing that comes up for "Muslim" or "Islam," which I think is the bigger issue (and the equivalent search term).
