It was a miracle a six-year-old boy survived the storm at sea and floated safely in an inner tube for two days and nights toward shore; a miracle that when he tired and began to slip, the dolphins who surrounded him like a contingent of angels pushed him upward; a miracle that a fisherman saw him bobbing in the shark-infested waters and scooped him aboard on the morning of Nov. 25, 1999, the day celebrated in America, the country his mother died bringing him to, as Thanksgiving.

And the last one in the house to hold him, trying desperately to protect him, was the fisherman who'd saved him from the sea -- which seemed fitting as it was Eastertide, the time that marks the sacrifice and resurrection of the Big Fisherman.

They are spending many times more on military-grade weapons than they've ever done in their history. Imagine if this was happening in another country. The mainstream news would be raising the alarm about the armament of an unaccountable paramilitary force.

According to federal procurement data, the agency spent $80 million on small-arms weapons last year, the most in any year since 2008 by a wide margin. The year before, it spent just $18.8 million, and in 2023, $16.4 million. Already in this year, ICE has spent nearly $26 million on small arms.

Some of its biggest recent purchases include nearly $20 million for a pair of contracts to Quantico Tactical and Geissele Automatics for various firearms and precision long guns, $4.7 million to Sig Sauer for red dot sights, a gadget for semiautomatic pistols and shotguns, and $4.3 million to Atlantic Diving Supply for gun silencers.

Their total hatred of the left makes it impossible for them to acknowledge that there are elected officials who have answered the questions they raise. some political candidates have already acknowledge this fact by moving left!

But a big tent is only worth pitching if something is argued inside it, and that is precisely what this midterm cycle has lacked. Handed the chance to litigate what the party actually believes, Democrats have mostly declined. What is the party’s answer on immigration, moving beyond its proper outrage at President Trump’s methods to include an affirmative account of who should be allowed in and how? What would it do about the cost of housing, beyond lamenting it and suggesting inadequate fixes? What does it want from the public education system? What is its response to the disruption that artificial intelligence is about to send through the work force and society more broadly?

In our interview, Ronaldo and Lorenzo Jr. told me about what their dad cherished. They took turns ticking off what he loved to eat. “Chile relleno, pozole, chilaquiles,” they said. “Anything my mom made with love,” Ronaldo added. He supported their mom’s garden, buying her flowers to plant, and he loved a good deal at the flea market. Last week it was a “big pot” for tamales, which reminded the young men of their childhood where, while they didn’t have a lot, they never wanted for anything.

One thing Lorenzo especially loved was his John Deere riding lawnmower. It was more than just a machine to him. The yard in the Araujos’ old home was too small for a riding mower. But with the bigger yard in their new home he “was able to justify the purchase,” Ronaldo said. It was a symbol of pride and progress.

The death of four-month-old Ahmad, from Deir Ammar refugee camp, was announced on Sunday evening. A longed-for baby, he was born after years of IVF treatment to a family and was healthy most of his short life. The family called emergency services when he developed a high fever on Sunday morning and medics sent an ambulance to the camp’s Ein Ayoub gate.

Since 7 October 2023 Israel has regularly barred vehicles including ambulances from driving through Ein Ayoub, which is the main route to Ramallah and its hospitals.

Residents can usually cross on foot but as Ahmad’s parents approached they were stopped by four Israeli soldiers, who had fired teargas at people in the area and ignored the family’s desperate pleas. A video of the incident was shared on X.

“This baby needed oxygen. If he had been allowed to reach an ambulance and get to the hospital, his life could have been saved,” said Arafat Ahmad Zaid, the boy’s uncle.

Abu Safiya described an attack there by guards using hammers and batons, shortly after appearing via video link at a supreme court appeal hearing challenging his detention. He was then moved to the Rakefet facility on 24 June, where Odeh noted a severe and dangerous deterioration in his condition.

“I have visited Dr Abu Safiya several times since his detention, but the individual I encountered during this latest visit was not the same person I had previously met,” Odeh said on Sunday, calling for an immediate independent medical examination. ‘‘His physical and psychological state, the severe injuries visible on his body, and his personal testimony leave no room for doubt: his life is in immediate danger.”

Abu Safiya appeared frightened, distressed and reluctant to speak freely in the meeting, Odeh said, but told his lawyer that he was subjected to daily beatings in the Rakefet jail, and had lost consciousness several times as a result.

Rakefet, where prisoners never see daylight, was built in the 1980s to hold senior organised crime figures before being closed on the grounds it was inhumane. It was reopened on the orders of the far-right national security minister, Itamar Ben-Gvir.

They like to append announcements with this boilerplate statement, which immigrant prisoners, advocates, attorneys, lawmakers, family members, and even detention camp workers themselves say is a lie.

Comprehensive medical care is provided from the moment individuals arrive and throughout the entirety of their stay. All people in ICE custody receive medical, dental and mental health intake screenings within 12 hours of arriving at each detention facility; a full health assessment within 14 days of entering ICE custody or arrival at a facility; access to medical appointments; and 24-hour emergency care. At no time during detention is a detained alien denied emergency care.

The federal government is hiding information about how many people it's holding. Bone-chilling.

Adrian’s death illustrates a concern I expressed recently about how non-citizens’ deaths are counted and not counted, and how they remain invisible even when they are reported. Because Adrian was not inside an ICE facility, he would not have been counted as a part of that facility’s detention numbers. Yet, legally he was still in ICE custody even as he sat inside a medical facility. How many people are in ICE custody across the country but not in a detention center? We may never know. When Republicans passed the recent funding bill, they stripped oversight and transparency requirements for ICE so we don’t even know what the total detained population is — much less have data on medical custody cases.

Before they dumped him in Ecuador, detention guards found other ways to punish him for organizing, including stealing all his legal documents and taking away his Quran, prayer beads, and a prayer rug, and repeatedly moving him to new camps. He was in 8 different camps in 10 months.

Undertaking collective action like a hunger strike “is a mechanism of self-defense before so many constitutional violations,” Bolufé said. The United States promises freedom, justice, and equality for all, but none of that works when people are falsely detained and held indefinitely, he said. It’s more accurate to call detainees “kidnapped” than it is “prisoners,” he said, because there’s no legal argument to support prolonged detention when no crime has been committed.

“The Union of People Kidnapped by ICE builds solidarity and mutual aid in response to the constitutional violations and the abuses committed against immigrants. In the face of injustice, the separation of families and the violation of fundamental rights, our response is clear: unity, dignity and defense of the Constitution,” he wrote. “The strength of our community lies in the solidarity, the justice and the respect to the rule of law.”

The new demands include an investigation into multiple instances of sexual abuse, restoration of all visitation privileges, expanded access to legal support, and that GEO Group must immediately hire medical staff and cleaning services. The courage of people undertaking collective action!

Release all the women, with priority given to women under the age of 21, women with medical conditions, and mothers.
Initiate and carry to completion independent investigations of all allegations of abuse. Women report that they have made multiple complaints of sexual abuse against a female officer.
Immediately restore all visitation privileges so that mothers, daughters, and family members can maintain meaningful contact with their loved ones.
Expand access to legal representation and support. Many women detained at Delaney Hall face complex immigration proceedings without attorneys or adequate legal assistance. Continued pro bono legal representation is needed to ensure individuals have meaningful access to due process.
GEO must contract cleaning services, so that people are not threatened to do labor for the benefit of a multibillion dollar corporation.
GEO must immediately hire new qualified medical staff including nurses and doctors available 24/7 to respond to emergencies. Nurses mistreat people and give people incorrect medications, medical attention is routinely denied.
GEO must immediately replace its current food supplier to meet basic nutritional and health standards. This includes providing healthy high quality meals that accommodate medical, religious, and dietary needs.
GEO must repair the plumbing and HVAC in particular the second bathroom in the women’s unit and all bathrooms of the facility. In addition to ventilation, air conditioning/circulation, water temperature controls, and drinking water systems
GEO must Provide safe drinking water. If safe drinking water cannot be guaranteed through faucets and water fountains, then bottled water should be brought into the units and made available through the commissary.
GEO is responsible for providing staff training, accountability systems and oversight, and security personnel changes to ensure dignified treatment of detained people.

Bolufe Izquierdo said: "It's important that the people of the United States open their eyes as to what is happening, because at any moment it could affect them... In my personal case it has been terrible, they have violated all my rights." ICE moved him to SEVEN camps to break his organizing.

Mr. Bolufe Izquierdo, who resided in Miami, Florida, was detained after a traffic stop and sent to the South Florida Detention Facility, the famous detention center nicknamed "Alligator Alcatraz." He was then victim of multiple transfers due to his organizing inside detention, including launching the Union of Kidnapped by ICE in Torrance County and NWDC, as well as for participating numerous hunger strikes of various lengths. The path of his detention included: South Florida Detention Facility (Florida), Camp East Montana (Texas), Torrance County Detention Facility (New Mexico), Etowah County Jail (Alabama), NWDC (Washington), Removal Operations Coordination Center (Arizona), Florence Service Processing Center (Arizona).

Retaliations for hunger strikes and organizing are common in NWDC, including harassment, taunting with food, limiting communication, moving to solitary confinement, up to transferring of facilities. Mr. Bolufe Izquierdo says that "Its important that the people of the United States open their eyes as to what is happening, because at any moment it could affect them... In my personal case it has been terrible, they have violated all my rights."

GEO Group staff wouldn't allow Sen. Andy Kim to talk to any of the prisoners inside Delaney Hall when he went to visit yesterday, so there's no way of knowing who this person is or what is wrong, only that she requires medical attention asap.

As Kim walked past the women’s unit, he said, he saw a group of women frantically waving their arms and pointing at someone curled up on a bed in pain. “They’re just frantic and waving and pointing, and I saw the woman curled up on the bed. I asked, ‘What is happening here?’” The guards, Kim said, didn’t answer. (GEO Group and ICE did not respond to requests for comment.)

If Democrats are who they say they are, if they really are the opposition to MAGA, they should be invigorated that someone with a backbone of steel is joining them.

At one point in 2024, Hamawy’s team had traveled from Egypt to Gaza while the Rafah crossing was open. But once there, Israeli soldiers told them they couldn’t leave Gaza the same way, nor could they leave the hospital grounds. With the help of Duckworth and other connections, Hamawy arranged for safe passage—but only for the U.S. citizens. Hamawy’s team was multinational, including members from Australia, Ireland, and Jordan, and he refused to leave them behind. Instead, he took days to coordinate with the U.N., the World Health Organization, and U.S. agencies while bombs fell around the hospital in intensified strikes. “I counted one time, we had 17 bombs land within an hour,” he said, “almost like a punishment for not leaving.”

Hamawy finally left the genocide when the rest of his team could, too. He told the Prospect he came to terms with the fact that he might die well before he undertook the mission, adding that fear is a poor reason for inaction.

“I feel we all have time that’s allotted to us,” he said. “If I let fear keep me from doing what I had to do, then nothing ever gets done in the world.”

That is the spirit he said he wants to see in American halls of power, the spirit that will win the U.S. back from bigotry, profit-seeking, and kingdom-building. He’s sick of seeing money go to war profiteers for violence abroad instead of for social services at home. And he’s sick of establishment Democrats’ inaction.
