Mostly baking and crosswords
Miss Grit opening for Nation of Language at Village Underground. Never heard of her before but really enjoying this – reminds me of some of the shoegazy stuff I was listening to a lot in the early 90s (anyone remember a band from back then called Bleach?)
Very much enjoyed Phantom At The Feast by Tony White. Not your average crime fic - somehow all the darker for its realism (no serial killers with elaborately gruesome MOs, just everyday stomach-churning nastiness and police corruption). Also features crosswords… #nowreading
Weekend reading sorted – I’ve had these on hold at the library since seeing them recommended on bsky a while back – one was tipped as a Booker candidate by its recommender but the wrong one… Fortuitous that both became available just as the longlist was announced. Both look great! #booksky
“Being constantly with the children was like wearing a pair of shoes that were expensive and too small. She couldn't bear to throw them out, but they gave her blisters.” Injury Time – Beryl Bainbridge #nowreading
Super cover too. Bought this as a birthday gift for my sis but seriously contemplating keeping it for myself…
Clearing out some boxes of my stuff from my mum’s loft recently, I found a copy of the Britpop issue of Select still in its plastic wrapper w/ posters. Probably worth at least a pound to collectors these days!
Clearing out my mum’s loft, found this - bet they don’t end stories like this any more…
Another loft find. This issue includes one of my awful gig reviews - not sharing here though, far too cringey… instead, here’s the crossword. I think it was my friend Steve who used to set these. I was barely even a competent solver in those days…
I have no recollection at all of this mag but apparently I liked it enough to save all the back issues. Seems to be from the same stable as Zzap!64 - and indeed the names Gary Penn and Oliver Frey appear inside… Editor Graeme Kidd was previously editor of Crash, the Speccy counterpart to Zzap…
I’d completely forgotten this ever existed - the “grown up” spinoff of 2000AD…
Must have been about 9-10 years old when I got this: The Danger Mouse File! I would show you what’s inside but it’s top secret!
From my time at Leeds Uni, early 90s - me and a few friends started “The 2 Tone Movement”, which was mostly an excuse to play some of our favourite records for like-minded souls. Great wheeze - the student union basically gave us free money to buy loads of records with!
A few other finds: souvenir of a visit to the House of Commons, circa 1994…
Mum’s selling the family home so I’ve been clearing the loft of 40 years worth of accumulated crap. Found my old Commodore 64 that I thought my parents had chucked years ago! Not sure that cassette deck will still work mind…
Local newspapers are a great source for these (or used to be before Reach killed them all)…
Just checked the app to see why my bus is late - driver seems to have taken a bit of a diversion…
I wonder if any physicists and/or philosophers I know have any thoughts on this Captcha I had to deal with today...
Don’t want to turn this into a who’s got the biggest dic(tionary) contest but… this was a bargain book club purchase many years ago. Came as a box set with a user guide and a magnifying glass. Chambers included for scale
In tribute to my dad, I made patxaran - sloes steeped in anis liqueur with vanilla, cinnamon and coffee beans. It’s a basque speciality - he introduced me to it on a memorable occasion in 1992 that ended with me being arrested! We’ll drink a glass in his memory at the family Christmas gathering
“Post a favourite work of art from the year exactly 50 years before you were born.”
Seen in window of local second-hand music/dvd/memorabilia emporium - wonder if it includes Ed Reardon’s episode…
Snapped Ankles. The kind of gig that’s such a joyous shared experience you find yourself hugging random strangers at the end. Amazing. #hardtimesfuriousdancing
