Honestly so far I’m having more fun with this Jac Jemc horror novel, it feels more punchy with its smoother writing style and short choppy chapters. I do think the main couple don’t speak like Actual People but they have enough personality and charm that carries my investment for them.
Reading this one all night and while it does a good job at building tension and stress, I feel like it’s not rewarding in regards to the things it hints at vs. the things it actually shows you. Already 60% through and there’s barely been any actual concrete scares or weirdness, just small moments.
just watched this (Banned from Broadcast: Saiko! The Large Family) and i still feel like my brain is buzzing. horror movie that badly wears the skin of a family drama documentary. seeing something awful unfold three degrees of separation away, to the point of basically being completely blind to it.
what really annoyed me was how this book (Staircase in the Woods) was being GLAZEDDDD by readers when it came out before I realized that it was probably being beloved by readers who aren’t actually horror fans. That can only explain why a line like this is in the book without any complaints

and after trawling around leaking money out of my pockets, I FINALLY spent it on something I’ve been trying to get my hands on for a while
cleaning my room right now and found an oldie that I have a soft spot for so this is a middle grade book, I have this memory of reading it when I was in middle school or early highschool. It was a summer at my grandmothers house in the more ruralish Ukrainian suburbs. I miss that place a lot.
