some thoughts re: author-publisher relations that came up for me during a text convo w/a colleague and that are too spicy for my “work” account

oh no. I wish there were a way to make authors understand *what* publishing *is.*
a lot of them treat their manuscripts like a rundown house that the publisher acts as a contractor to renovate
and then there are the ones who are constantly paranoid and act like everyone besides their acq ed is conspiring in a plot to sabotage the book.

think it thru, people! if we were successful in sabotaging your book, it wouldn't sell well! our firm wouldn't get the money we want to get from pubbing it! we wouldn't get OUR paychecks. [laughing-hard emoji; sobbing emoji]

It's hard to find fault with the deeply emotional ride of Beyond the Wall except, perhaps, in its unrelenting seriousness. Still, with a cast of players this strong, one can forgive its earnestness and revel in performances that bring Tyner's and Coltrane's innovations into the 21st Century.

Little enough is certain about the painter Romare Bearden (1911–88) that even the pronunciation of his name remains unclear. In taped interviews, Bearden pronounced it RO-mer-ee, while his intimates simply called him Romy. Oddly, today Ro-MARE is what one hears most often, and even longtime friends have largely adopted this pronunciation.

at Natural Bridge State Park, Virginia. encountered the Virginia Junior Sasquatch. he seemed mostly friendly.

book recommendation: I borrowed the audiobook of this from my library on a whim. turned out to be really good! well-wrought characters and pretty wise about the ways of the human heart, in addition to being a compelling mystery/thriller. also, the voice acting for the audiobook was quite good.
