Many thanks to the visitors who cleared up the remains of a BBQ at #TrenchWood before we got there. We shouldn’t have to remind everyone that fires and barbecues are not allowed on our nature reserves. Please take all rubbish home as discarded items, especially glass bottles, can ignite 🔥

These are nursery web spiderlings...when mum can feel that the spiderlings are hatching in the egg-sac she carries, she spins a protective web for them to emerge within. Mum patrols the outside of the web to keep them safe until they disperse - just like in this photo 👇

Spotted in #Worcestershire ✨🐛 Newly-hatched gypsy moth caterpillars disperse by climbing to the top of a plant stem, suspending themselves on a silken thread and then and letting the wind take them wherever it wants to. This is known as ballooning and it's a trick that some spiders use too! 🕷️

It's a hornet mimic hoverfly! At almost 2cm long, it's the largest hoverfly species in the UK. As its name suggests, it is an excellent mimic of the hornet, but is harmless to us. 🐝

The lovely caterpillar will turn into a beautiful emperor moth! An unmistakeable insect of heaths, sand dunes and grasslands, the emperor moth is fluffy, grey-brown, with big peacock-like eyespots on all four wings. 😍🦋

Now is a great time to look for insects on flower heads 🪲🌼 Thanks to our colleague Ellie for snapping this photo at #UptonWarren showing just how great hogweed is for longhorn beetles. The large, flat flowerheads make the perfect platform for easy landings and take offs 🙌

Oh hello little glow-worm larvae 🪱🌟 Cute as they look, the larvae of glow-worms are predators, feeding on slugs and snails. They kill their prey by delivering a series of toxic bites, injecting digestive proteins that paralyse and eventually dissolve the soft body of the slug or snail. 🐌

Well done everyone, it is a buff-tip moth! It is a master of disguise, blending in perfectly as it looks just like the twig of a birch tree! Flying only at night, the buff-tip moth can be seen from May to July.
