With Many Honors
Commonwealth students generally distinguish
themselves in national measures of academic success,
and the Class of 2011 was no exception. As Bill
Wharton remarked when he saw the score reports, “These
kids are also really good at taking standardized tests.”
Twelve students were named National Merit Finalists,
the most since 2006. Four of them received scholarships: Ben
Kuhn and Caleb Weinreb were awarded $2,500 directly from
the National Merit program to fund their studies at Harvard
and Brown, respectively; Raphaela Hsu-Flanders received
her National Merit Scholarship from Macalester College;
and David Raevsky’s came from the University of Southern
California. Including National Merit commended students,
62% of the class was recognized by the National Merit
program, maintaining the impressive average of the last
five years.
In addition, the year saw a large increase in the number
of seniors honored by the College Board’s Advanced
Placement (AP) program. Twenty-four of 37 seniors were
recognized: five as AP Scholars, four as Scholars with Honor,
and 15 as Scholars with Distinction. Three of those students
were also named National AP Scholars: Mario Alvarez,
Richard Benua, and Daniel Moraff.

As most of this campus recognizes, Mitt Romney as president would be horrific. Voting in a swing state is very complicated, and ethically I don't know how to sort that one out. But in the other states, it's simple. If you vote for Barack Obama, you are throwing your vote away. You are supporting the stranglehold that corporate America has over our government. You are propping up the status quo.

The Green Party's presidential candidate Jill Stein is on the right side of every issue discussed above. She has spent her life fighting for social justice and has put forth several excellent policies, including single-payer health care and a new federal jobs program. No, she won't win. But that's all the more reason that after this election we need to work harder than ever.

In 2022, with the goal of promoting more diversity and inclusion in brewing, Maine Beer Company and its co-founder Daniel Kleban ’04, established the USM “Brewing Up Opportunity” internship/scholarship program with a gift of $100,000. Dan’s hope is that “our collaboration with USM will create an access point into the craft beer industry, cultivating the next generation and changing the narrative of who makes up that community.” The program provides a USM student with a paid summer internship at the brewery plus a scholarship award of up to $5,000 per year when the internship is completed.

Dan has a special appreciation for the unexpected circumstances that can derail a student’s path to a college degree. His personal campaign gift of $75,000 established the Ann Kleban Memorial Scholarship Fund. The scholarship, honoring his mother, benefits students who have encountered a family emergency that makes them unable to pay their tuition.

My brother and I started Maine Beer Company in 2009 with the goal of creating a
company purposed with doing good through great beer. “Do what’s right”, our motto, is
at the forefront of every decision we make, from how we treat our employees, to the
beer we brew, to taking care of the world around us.
When we started our business, there weren’t very many breweries in the state, and the
common assumption was a 1:1 ratio of brewery license to retail license. At the time, we
couldn’t even charge customers for samples of our beer, and tasting rooms were
virtually non-existent. The evolution of the industry allowed us to grow our business,
expanding on our Freeport location and investing millions of dollars in equipment and
infrastructure. This growth required more staff, and we now employ over 100
employees, providing 100% company-paid health insurance and 5% or more towards
retirement.
We are proud to have donated almost $4,000,000 to nonprofits since 2009, and much of
our support stays in Maine, helping small communities and preserving the environment.

Men's reactions to the questions raised here: A very few men seem to feel, when they hear conversations involving these problems, that they have a right to be present and participate in them, since they are so deeply involved. At the same time, very few men can respond non-defensively, since the whole idea is either beyond their comprehension or threatens and exposes them. The usual response is laughter. That inability to see the whole issue as serious, as the straitjacketing of both sexes, and as societally determined often shapes our own response so that we learn to think in their terms about ourselves and to feel silly rather than trust our inner feelings. The problems we're listing here, and what others have said about them, are therefore largely drawn from conversations among women only and that difficulty in establishing dialogue with men is a recurring theme among people we've talked to.

Lack of community for discussion: Nobody is writing, or organizing or talking publicly about women, in any way that reflects the problems that various women in the movement come across and which we've tried to touch above. Consider this quote from an article in the centennial issue of The Nation:

However equally we consider men and women, the work plans for husbands and wives cannot be given equal weight. A woman should not aim for "a second-level career" because she is a woman; from girlhood on she should recognize that, if she is also going to be a wife and mother, she will not be able to give as much to her work as she would if single. That is, she should not feel that she cannot aspire to directing the laboratory simply because she is a woman, but rather because she is also a wife and mother; as such, her work as a lab technician (or the equivalent in another field) should bring both satisfaction and the knowledge that, through it, she is fulfilling an additional role, making an additional contribution.

The winner of this election will be one of two terrible men.

President Obama filled his administration with Wall Street lifers, who have instituted pro-Wall Street policies. He redirected the bailout toward big banks and away from struggling homeowners. He let the people who engaged in highly damaging and probably illegal behavior - see the Levin-Coburn report if you're interested - walk away scot-free. This is just the tip of the iceberg. In short, he has favored the interests of the wealthy over those of everyone else, and he's given Wall Street no incentive to avoid committing the same abuses that led to the recession.

I know Israel is seen as somehow uniquely evil and Israelis (even babies & grandparents apparently) deserve to be killed, kidnapped, hunted down, burned alive & sexually assaulted because of the Israeli government's actions, but are we really considering a terrorist attack a "liberation struggle"?

On Sunday, October 8th, thousands of New Yorkers gathered in Times Square to stand in solidarity with Palestine. The rally took place a day after Palestinian resistance factions in Gaza initiated an unprecedented liberation struggle, the “Al-Aqsa Flood,” in response to accelerating attacks on Palestinians in Jerusalem and the West Bank, and in defiance of Israel’s efforts to ghettoize, besiege, starve, and suffocate the people of Gaza into total submission. As the organizers of this protest, we called on our communities in New York to rally behind a simple message: We stand with the Palestinian people. We defend their fundamental right to resist an illegal occupation, break out of their concentration camp, and defy the cruelty of the sixteen-year Zionist blockade.

Zitner followed up by asking whether the vetting process brought up Platner's controversial Reddit posts where he made comments demeaning women and mocking U.S. soldiers.

"The firm sent us a thing, and it had some of the posts, but it didn't have all of them," Moraff said.

Despite the things he did see, Moraff insisted that none of Platner's past comments "will or should stop him from becoming a U.S. senator."

The woman, a 41-year-old Maine resident named Jenny Racicot, detailed the alleged incident to POLITICO in three interviews over the past two weeks. POLITICO also spoke with a man Racicot dated and confided in the years after the alleged incident, and reviewed documents, including emails between Racicot and her therapist and messages between Racicot and an acquaintance whom she warned against getting involved with Platner years before he ran for office.

Israeli outrage about the film was predictable. More surprising is that some leftists in Europe are boycotting Lapid and his work in the name of Palestinian solidarity. Last month, about a dozen pro-Palestinian filmmakers threatened to pull out of the Marseille International Film Festival because Lapid, an Israeli who’d taken public money, was going to be on the jury. Not wanting to cause trouble for the organizers, Lapid agreed to step down and instead hold a public master class on his films, but that too was canceled under pressure. “For them, even if I would have been selling hot dogs in the festival, it wouldn’t be legitimate,” he told me.

And I know how hard it is to do that at the same time because there are very few people who are actually shedding tears when both Israeli Jews and Palestinians are dying. There are very few people who are doing that. And it feels to me, that is the essential struggle of this time, because I don’t frankly want to hear from the people who are in the streets, who are shouting about decolonizing Palestine, who do not shed a tear when Vivian Silver, a 74-year-old warrior for peace, who dedicated her life to peace, is murdered by Hamas. If your heart doesn’t break for Vivian Silver, then don’t tell me what you think my heart should be breaking for.

And the same is true on the other side, for the people who are absolutely devastated by losses to Jews, but then feel it’s offensive to even report on the Palestinian children who are dying in Gaza. I’m sorry, but we have lost our moral center. What we have to do is expand our scope of moral concern to find the humanity in one another again. That is the call of our time.

But some of those so-called insiders—that is, the NIH—funded research that helped scientists better understand cystic fibrosis, which led to Vertex Pharmaceuticals developing a cutting-edge treatment that Vought’s daughter Porter benefited from. In a 2021 Instagram post, Vought’s then-wife shared that the couple’s daughter had started Trikafta, a drug that has shown great promise in managing pulmonary issues associated with cystic fibrosis, which affects some 40,000 Americans.

Cystic fibrosis can lead to respiratory issues, including worsening lung function, even with the best non-experimental care. Trikafta is currently the focus of a study—backed by a $2.9 million grant from NIH—which seeks to understand what makes the drug so effective in some patients. NIH also funds other cystic fibrosis-related research, laying out $84 million annually to support research related to the disease. “We’re extremely grateful to live in a nation that leads the way on medical innovation,” Mary Vought wrote in her 2021 post.

Supporters of Israel made that point after the brutal sexual assaults against Israeli women during the Hamas-led attack on Israel on Oct. 7, 2023. Donald Trump, Joe Biden, Benjamin Netanyahu and many U.S. senators, including Marco Rubio, condemned that sexual violence, and Netanyahu rightly called on “all civilized leaders” to “speak up.”

It's hard to believe anyone would vote for a man who gave a sweetheart deal (1 month in jail) to a child rapist. Hoffman admitted to repeatedly sexually assaulting a boy from 6-10 years old. He threatened to shoot the boy if he told anyone. www.kwtx.com/2026/04/16/e...

The boy, who is undergoing counseling, testified at Hoffman’s first trial that Hoffman routinely sexually abused him during sleepovers at Hoffman’s China Spring home from April 2019 to April 2022. He told jurors the abuse started when he was 6 or 7 and continued until he reported it when he was 10.

The displaying harmful material charge stems from Hoffman showing the boy sexually explicit videos on Hoffman’s tablet.

Hoffman’s son and the boy met at a martial arts class and became best friends, trial testimony showed.

The boy told Dr. Soo Battle, medical adviser for the Advocacy Center for Crime Victims and Children that Hoffman threatened to shoot him if he reported the abuse.

“I finally told because it was making me depressed and causing me anxiety,” Battle quoted the boy as saying. “I couldn’t take it anymore.”
