Every year this sound makes us smile. 😀 The black seed-pods of broom exploding in the sun. ☀️ This year it seems to be louder than ever before - no longer a quiet 'walk in the woods'! Can you hear them snap and pop?👂️ #Nature
All hail the Gold Dust Alders! 👑 These Perthshire ancients were already woodland royalty, but dressed in a shimmering coat of Gold Dust lichen (Chrysothrix candelaris we think), they're looking positively regal. Long may they reign over the woodland! 🌳✨ #ThickTrunkTuesday #TooManyPuns 😀
Check out this giant wood wasp at our Pressmennan Wood in East Lothian! A real whopper! This beastie lays its eggs in pine trees. It may look fearsome but is harmless, with no sting.

The Earlstoun lightning oak is still standing despite being almost split in two in an electrical storm many years ago.⚡️ Find out more and vote, on the Woodland Trust website before September 29th. 👉 buff.ly/WM36HBd 2/2
UK Tree of the Year voting is now open with two fantastic Scottish contenders. This year's competition celebrates nature's great survivors, with the theme ‘against the odds’. The Balloch Castle ash has survived lightning, ash dieback and an Oasis concert!🎸 🧵 1/2
A talon to talon tussle as Dorcha fights off a younger osprey intent on taking over her nest at Loch Arkaig Pine Forest. The pair locked talons and tumbled overboard, while the two chicks sensibly kept their heads down. No harm done but the intruder has persisted. Watch live👉 buff.ly/eqbKtpD
🌳 Thick and Thicker Trunk Tuesday 😆 Beech trees are a recognised & visible boundary marker in many parts of Scotland, particularly in the #ScottishBorders where they form hedgerows or lines along fields, dykes & park edges. These 3 were recorded nr Ancrum. #ThickTrunkTuesday #HeritageTrees
🐦⬛ A group from @scottishbirding.bsky.social Lothian branch encountered 25 species when they visited our #Pressmennan Wood on Saturday, including mandarin duck, moorhen, little grebe, nuthatch, tree creeper, bullfinch, house martin, long-tailed tit and yellowhammer.👏 Great to see you folks!🙂
🪻Now is a great time to head out and look for wild orchids. Our native orchids are much smaller than the ones you'll find in supermarkets, but just as beautiful when you stop for a closer look. 📸 Have you spotted any wild orchids yet this year? Share your photos in the comments!

The #MeikleourBeechHedge #Perthshire was planted in 1745 & is a Guinness-recorded living landmark: ~540m long & ~30m high. Legend says its planters died at Culloden, that's why it grows to the heavens. Lots of stems host war-time graffiti, their letters now stretched over time. #ThickTrunkTuesday

Colour hunt at #Foulshiels Wood 🌈 Have a go when next in the woods - choose a colour or see if you can find the whole rainbow! 🔎
While looking back at pictures we'd taken of tree bumblebees, we noticed something a little different, a Narcissus bulb fly (we think)! At first glance, it's easy to mistake this fly for a #Bumblebee and that's exactly the point. 📸 It's a great reminder to take a closer look at your photos
Here is an amazing job opportunity for someone! More information here 👉 buff.ly/LwaNwMZ @theicf.bsky.social #forestryjobs #conservationjobs

A reminder to all anglers - please take your tangles home and dispose of them safely. We know that many do. Our chicks are assessed to be both females and we are now seeking suggestions for names. 2/3
A nasty surprise for the raptor worker who visited our Loch Arkaig ospreycam nest to ring and measure the chicks. It was festooned in fishing line with a tangle around one of the chick's feet.😬 You can just about make it out in these photos. Thankfully he was able to remove it all. 🧵 1/3
2/3They removed 150 bags in fact! In a bid to stop future issues the children made signs which have gone in near the entrances. Latest reports are that these seem to be working.🙂 But surely it shouldn't take children to keep dog-owners right on this topic?
💩 One of life's great mysteries is why some people bag dog poo, but then abandon it rather than bin it. 🤔 These legends from Liff Primary School did a litter-pick at our Backmuir Wood near Dundee, and found most of the rubbish was bagged poo. 🧵 1/3
One of our favourite trees added to the #AncientTreeInventory this year - a charming sweet chestnut (Castanea sativa) recorded at Kilravock Castle near Inverness in May. At 7.74m in circumference at 1.1 m it's impressively thick (& thankfully pretty healthy too🤞). #ThickTrunkTuesday
