On Day 6 of the 1944 Warsaw Uprising, 19‑year‑old platoon commander Stanisław Gromulski (codename "Ruskin") died in the hospital on Śliska Street 51 from wounds he received on 4 August—he was hit by shrapnel in the abdomen on Chmielna Street 6.
On Day 6 of the #WarsawUprising, 16-year-old Zbigniew Adamczyk (codename "Gordon") was severely wounded at the Marszałkowska–Plac Zbawiciela barricade. He was taken to a field hospital on Marszałkowska Street but later died from his injuries. #OTD #History #WW2
#OTD 1944 — 24-year-old nurse Krystyna Wańkowicz, codename "Anna," was killed during the #WarsawUprising. She was struck by mortar/grenade fire in the Calvinist (Evangelical) Cemetery in Wola while covering retreating fighters; her body was never found.
On this day in 1944 — the fifth day of the Warsaw Uprising — nurses Zofia Horodyńska‑Waśkowska (31) and her 22‑year‑old sister Maria lost their lives on Dąbrowski Square while carrying the wounded. Before the war Zofia worked as a graphic designer and illustrated children's books;
Around 6pm #OTD during the #WarsawUprising German troops entered St. Lazarus Hospital in Wola. Inside were the sick and wounded, about 150 hospital staff with their families, five doctors, a scout nursing team of 15, dozens of captured German soldiers being treated, and roughly 300 other patients.
On the fifth day of the Warsaw Uprising, 31-year-old film and theatre actor and insurgent Zbigniew Rakowiecki was seized and murdered at Radomska Street by the SS‑RONA (Kamiński’s) Brigade — a unit notorious for mass murder and sexual violence. His killing was part of the Ochota massacre,
Day 4 of the #WarsawUprising: 32-year-old physician Władysław Budzyński was shot by German soldiers in the hospital where he worked while trying to aid an injured nurse. He was buried in a mass grave, later exhumed and reinterred in 1947 at Powązki Military Cemetery.
On Day 5 of the #WarsawUprising, teenage nurse Barbara Dominiak — codename "Baśka" — succumbed to wounds sustained in the fighting. About 14–15 years old, she was burned and seriously injured.
Day 3 of the #WarsawUprising: 21-year-old messenger Henryka Narostek lost her life the same day her 24-year-old fiancé, Antoni Grabowski, was killed. That morning Antoni’s platoon had dismantled rails between Legionowo and Chotomów to derail German trains, blocking a key route.
Captured on the first day of the #WarsawUprising while carrying an order between units, 19-year-old messenger Halina Jasiukowicz was executed by German forces on Skolimowska Street on this day. #History #WW2
Day 2 of the Warsaw Uprising and 19 year old messenger Hanna Rychłowska was killed while trying to break through to the Kampinos forest where the rest of her unit was located. There were about 150 insurgents that set off and they were all armed with a dozen or so pistols, grenades, and rifles.
Day 2 of the #WarsawUprising and 23 year old medic, Maria Kwiecinska, codename, "Maja" was killed alongside her husband Lieutenant Zbigniew Kwieciński, codename "Pretwicz". They were part of a group of insurgents who launched an attack on a Dominican Monastery in the southern part of Warsaw.
It was #OTD in 1944, in the first few hours of the #WarsawUprising, 18 year old nurse, Dorota Łempicka, codename,"Dorota" was seriously wounded trying to help another wounded soldier, Lieutenant Franciszek Gramza codename "Franek". Dorota and Franciszek died from the injuries they sustained that day
It was #OTD in 1944, that 19 year old Jerzy Cieslak, codename "Prądzynski" was killed during the #WarsawUprising. He died in the first few hours of the Uprising most likely after a battle with the Germans while he was on his way to his platoon's meet up point.
Oddly enough, right now, I am at the commemoration where the personnel carrier was used by zgrupowanie Krybar in the fight for Warsaw University.
This fight was to last 63 days and it would cost nearly 180,000 lives, many of them civilians. Today is a day to reflect, honour and remember them. #History #WW2 #WarsawUprising
