Rewet, replant, restore
A whole week of #Rain in the forecast! At last. Great to see restoration helping hold water in the uplands in the meantime. Rewetting really does help things stay wet (surprisingly!). It’s one of our best lines of defence against #ClimateChange. #SphagnumMonday #GreatNorthBog #Peatland #Wildfire
Finishing up our annual #Peatland vegetation monitoring for NFC! A big thank-you to all the volunteers who came out and gave us a hand. It’s still very hot and dry out there, but thankfully, the #Sphagnum is still wet! ☀️🌿 #Monitoring #GreatNorthBog #ClimateChange
Setting up a new monitoring plot for the reintroduction of S. austinii at Kingsdale Head Farm. This species is excellent at forming large hummocks, which could play an important role in making #Peatlands more resilient to #ClimateChange. #SphagnumMonday #GreatNorthBog
Fieldwork comes with some amazing encounters. Here's a snapshot of the #Wildlife we've spotted during our current #Peatland survey in the northern #Yorkshire Dales. #GreatNorthBog #PeatlandRestoration
Just another day doing a #Peatland survey... until #Pennywise starts rustling around in the bracken. Suddenly much less interested in ground-truthing. 🎈👀 #IT #GreatNorthBog
Last week we shared a picture of a dry #Sphagnum. Well since then, it rained! Sphagnum is back 😎!! It just shows how good it is to have a widespread Sphagnum carpet #GreatNorthBog #SphagnumMonday #ClimateChange #Carbon
It is still dry as a bone out there. On intensively managed #Peatlands, even Sphagnum struggles. The water table is way too low. We need to restore these landscapes to make them more resilient to climate change. #GreatNorthBog #SphagnumMonday #ClimateChange
Glorious bog pools full of S. cuspidatum in the North York Moors. These pools were formed after dams were installed 3 years ago. An important source of water for the wildlife in an otherwise dry landscape #SphanumMonday #GreatNorthBog #Peatland

No, we are not on our way to throw a ring into a volcano! Just kicking off our annual NFC monitoring campaign #PeatlandMonitoring #GreatNorthBog #LOTR
Our lovely colleague, Lucy C, left us for distant shores yesterday and we will miss her creativity and wit across our social media platforms - have fun on your travels, mate.
S. cuspidatum slowly colonising one of our many #ReflectingPool. #SphagnumMonday #GreatNorthBog #Peatland
We recently visited a site that was restored about 2 years ago in the Yorkshire Dales. Sphagnum plugs are doing great! #PeatlandRestoration #SphagnumMonday #GreatNorthBog
As part of the #PeatConf26 in Swansea, we visit forest-to-bog restoration sites. Happy to see that #Sphagnum was back! #SphagnumMonday #GreatNorthBog @iucn-uk-peat.bsky.social
Great first day at #PeatConf26! Looking forward to site visits tomorrow.
ICYMI we've just created a leaflet to highlight all the #Peatland habitat on the Dales Way - if you're walking the Way (or just interested in peat), you can find it online and in @yorkshiredales.org.uk visitor centres: www.yppartnership.org.uk/Peaty-dales-... #GreatNorthBog
The peat team out of their natural habitat (the #GreatNorthBog) but not out of their element (drizzle) exploring @yorkswildlife.bsky.social Park Gill. Plenty of unfamiliar botanical interest (and also drizzle) to round out a team meeting.
We recently attended the Educate North Awards, where our project with @manchester.ac.uk, Peatfix, won an award for a sustainable green initiative! #GreatNorthBog #PeatlandRestoration
We have some dates for our Blanket Bog Indicator Species and Introducing Sphagnum Mosses short courses - book now to make sure of your place: www.yppartnership.org.uk/train-yorksh... #GreatNorthBog
Tadpoles and Sphagnum! 🐸 #SphagnumMonday #GreatNorthBog #Frog #Spring
An immensely happy birthday to Sir David Attenborough on his century from the whole YPP team - he has been a huge inspiration to us all. Here is our leader, Rosie, meeting him at @yorkswildlife.bsky.social's Askham Bog. Absolutely *none* of us are jealous...
When you think you’ve found a rare Sphagnum, but it’s just another S. fallax with a weird shape. #MayThe4th #SphagnumMonday #GreatNorthBog #StarWars
S. cuspidatum and frog spawn... A lot of frog spawn! 🐸 #SphagnumMonday #GreatNorthBog #Frog #Spring
#GroundNestFest is go in the #GreatNorthBog this weekend! Come and find out about the amazing birds that make the moors their home: www.ywt.org.uk/ground-nest-...
