"London | Pauline Hanson has recorded a podcast with British far-right figure Tommy Robinson, two weeks after an interview with Robinson cost Karl Stefanovic his lucrative career with the Nine Network.

Hanson, visiting the UK this week for a major conservative political conference in London, was described by Robinson as one of the "bravest lady's on the planet".

In Climate News Tracker's analysis of June heatwaves in BBC, Sky News, ITV News & Channel 4 News, they found climate change was mentioned in 40 of the 167 articles, but fossil fuels were mentioned as driving this warming in just 5% of the articles‼️ 🤯 👉 climatenewstracker.org/how-news-web...

Climate change was mentioned in 40 of the 167 articles, 24% of the total and fossil fuels were mentioned as driving this warming in 5%.

This sits between the two other platforms in Climate News Tracker's June heatwave series, as 62% of TV and radio programmes and 16% of Instagram and TikTok posts from public service media organisations linked the heatwave to climate change.

Where the climate link was made online, it often came from named scientists rather than reporters themselves."

"Europe needs to recognize the naivety of viewing the defence of science as a matter of better communication, whereby populist politicians can be swayed by reason. Better messaging will not protect science if a populist government has set out to undermine science itself or if the very institutions that produce and interpret that evidence can be captured through political appointees, funding or regulatory pressures.

Scientific bodies, academies, journals, universities, public health agencies, and professional associations across Europe should now ask themselves some uncomfortable questions:

• What legal protections do they have?
• How dependent are they on government funding?
• What would they do if their leaders were investigated, defamed, or prosecuted?
• Could they defend members who refused political interference?
• Do they have alliances across countries, disciplines, and institutions?
• Have they agreed, in advance, where engagement ends, and complicity begins?

This last question is decisive. Authoritarian populism thrives when each institution believes it can survive by remaining quiet a little longer, while its peers fall. The ADA's subsequent statement in our opening example was a masterclass in how to say nothing [3]. There is a difference between declining party-political alignment and remaining silent when scientific independence itself is under attack. Silence then becomes policy. Caution becomes obedience. Neutrality becomes alignment. The defence of science requires the opposite: visible solidarity, transparent standards, independent review, and a willingness to bear costs before the damage becomes irreversible. This is why anticipatory obedience is so dangerous: it gives power to what it has not even had to demand yet. Science is not protected by calling it 'gold standard'. It is protected by institutions that can say no [27]"

That means paying attention to what is being strengthened, what becomes easier to say or do, and what becomes harder. For organisations working alongside communities that already experience discrimination, exclusion or unequal access to care, these are not abstract matters. They carry real consequences.

I do not pretend there are easy answers. Reasonable people will draw the line in different places, and that is to be expected.

"Despite bad weather and poor visibility for most of the 87-day voyage, the observer report records 94 whale sightings, mostly pygmy blue whales, and on 33 occasions the vessels took some mitigation action. 'There may have been more unseen whales, but the observers struggled to detect them acoustically because baleen species rarely vocalise in feeding grounds and because of the noise of the ship itself. While the observer report says there were no instances of noncompli-ance with environmental guidelines, NOPSEMA initiated its own investigation in 2021. A largely redacted report released under freedom of information indicates NOPSEMA's con-cerns about what actions Schlumberger took when its vessels encountered such a high number of whales; whether the survey was consistent with environmental requirements; and whether necesary shutdowns and re-starts were imple-mented correctly. It also found that the survey went beyond its permit zone. NOPSEMA recommended escalating the investigation "to ascertain the full extent of the offences and degree of culpability (if civil or criminal prosecution is potentially warranted)", Five years later, NOPSEMA says the investigation is still "under legal review".

Last week I spoke about racism online. This is what followed.

"You will never be Australian."

"Therefore, your opinion is irrelevant."

"Fries, bag, deliver, shut up."

The screenshots attached to this post are only a small sample. And honestly, they're the more tame public comments from one post on one social media platform. The private messages are another thing altogether.

I'm not sharing this because I want sympathy. I've been doing this for a long, long time. I've got a platform, support and can see through the ugliness of this.

But a lot of people don't have what I have. And I get frustrated when racism is treated like something people just need to be more resilient about. It's not just a personal issue. It's a leadership, workplace and culture issue. It's a question about what we're willing to tolerate when the person being targeted isn't in the room.

The silence around racism is rarely neutral. Silence tells people which forms of harm are taken seriously, and which forms of harm they're expected to just absorb. A couple of people with public profiles reached out to me privately after seeing the abuse. I appreciated that. I really did.

But private support and public leadership aren't the same thing. A lot of organisations and public figures are very happy to talk about diversity when it's easy. Food, festivals, stories, culture, representation, harmony, all of that.

The actual test isn't whether you enjoy our food or celebrate our culture. The test is what you do when racism is visible, ugly, inconvenient and likely to cost you something.

That's the conversation I keep having with organisations and prioritising for leaders who want to make a meaningful difference. Inclusion can't just be about "representation" anymore. It has to be about what happens when those people are harmed, targeted, undermined or told they don't belong.

Because for a lot of racialised people, the message is pretty clear. We can stay quiet and be "grateful", but the moment we speak with authority, challenge racism, or question the status quo, someone will try to remind us that our belonging is still conditional.

Leadership matters. Say something. Not because racialised people need saving, but because silence is part of why this keeps happening.
