Chinese microbrands have gone through a quality revolution even since I started blogging about them on here not long ago. And in many ways they out-spec most Japanese watches at 2x the price. They still don't beat them in the subjective feeling that it's a real consumer product like this Seiko.

Chinese watch manufacturing is going through a revolution. The Japanese making NH and 9000 series movements harder to get has pushed Chinese brands to turn to Swiss movements and Chinese clone movements, which are improving with increased demand. This has driven up the end-product price and case and clasp finishing has jumped to justify that premium, pushing Chinese watch brands into closer competition with Japanese watches, entry-level Swiss and Western microbrands.

Seiko Prospex Street Series "Mini Tuna" Solar Diver ref.SNE533P1 in navy blue. Surprisingly wearable for a 46.2mm steel case. It cost me $420 at retail, but you can probably find it cheaper, if you can find it.

If I could raise my hand higher and chime the hour, I'd be a town clock.

I told myself id nevwr buy another Solar watch after so many bad experiences with watches I'd wrongly stored in a box, so hopefully I'll keep this one alive.

It's BIG watch, like Panerai big. But being slimer than a classic Turtle, it's wearable.

If I remember right. SEIKO wanted to make a trendy street series but at 20ATM pressure rating they lacked the credibility of a traditional monster diver and the hype premium collapsed quickly.

I saw this one six months ago at double the retail price, and decided if I couldn't have one I'd get a Chinese homage at half retail. But procrastination saced me and I ended up with the one I wanted at fair retail price.

As a former knifemaker, this is the second* most dangerous knife (to its user) that I've ever seen. It makes me angry just looking at it.

*The most dangerous knife to its user was the original North Star bushcraft knife. It was like if you designed a knife out of spite.

What's /wrong/ with it? While not deal killers for me, I have a few misgivings. See photos and Alt text. In summary, I am delighted with it for the $200 I paid, but it's not going to be as much of a slam-dunk as most of the watches I show you on Bluesky.

It's heavy. Rolex Sea Dweller heavy. With 4 links removed for my 8.25" wrist, it comes in at 149g. If you often swap watches, you'll feel it constantly throughout the day.

It has a Miyota 8215. It manually winds like a cheap Japanese wind up toy from the 70s, which it probably is. The automatic rotor only winds one way and judders like a fidget spinner if you flick your wrist.

And it has only 100m of depth rating. Very low for a Planet Ocean. I wouldn't dive with this, but maybe I'd swim with it.

There are only three micro adjustment holes and only TWO of them are usable. Why? On the tightest fitting, the fliplock interferes with the release button block and it's impossible to close the clasp with the flip lock folded.

As a result, you only have 3mm of microadjustment and the links are 8mm long so some people will never size this comfortably. I was lucky. And in a pinch, I can use the flip lock if my wrist swells.

The screw pins are sub par. The screwdriver slips are unusually narrow. The hole threads are rough and it is harder than most to resize. And the pins do not all sit at a consistent height.

The bracelet edges are not sharp, but they aren't smooth, so you may want to spend some time carefully sanding the edges, as I did. Now the bracelet wears like a Tudor.

Pagani Design PD-YS034 is a beast. It's probably the best watch they've made and I've seen quite a few. While I'd recommend it, don't rush out to buy one before you've read the Alt text and all the replies in the thread.

A beautiful watch, with facets as opposed to curves. I chose the black bezel over the orange and blue options because those are really iconic flashes of the Omega Planet Ocean. In black it is less identifiable as a clone. Bezel action is better than most.

The short clasp looks stylish and locks easily ans securely.

Short flip lock! Enough for a wet suit, not enough for a dry suit, short enough to serve as a tool-less adjustment for days when your wrist swells.

The Watchdives Seafarer WD1967Q is based on the classic mid-60s Omega Seamaster 300 Reference 165.024. It's modernized and made practical shrinking from 41mm to 39mm, with a VH31 sweep seconds quartz movement, modern lume and an Oyster style bracelet. I paid $125, shipped.

It's not a Seamaster 300 and it won't scratch thr itch if you want one of those. But it's hyper-practical and handsome.

Calling it "slim" does it an injustice. It rides so low it may as well be a part of my arm.

That bezel is grippy and has a great bezel action.

My Tudor Submariner ref.79090 looks and feels really good on this aftermarket bracelet. The balance is right too. I spent some time buffing to get it to look and feel right. But it's not bad for a $20 Chinese strap and it'll do till I find an original one.

The TAG Heuer CG1110-0 Quartz Chronograph was a personal grail since I was a kid. It epitomizes late 80s to 90s styling with its soft organic shapes and small watch head with short lug-lug distance. I got this from BirthYearWatches.com at a very reasonable price.

It's a double hander. The long white seconds hand tells the stopwatch seconds, the red tells stopwatch minutes.

It's like beads of mercury, but non-toxic. I've. Never felt anything more comfortable to wear. Yes, it has a dent and some wear. It's lived a life, as have I.

This is what clasps were like back in the day. Except this has a softer feel and curves.

It's been years since I developed film. I tested the bottle of Supergrain developer that had been opened mid COVID and wasn't sure it would do much so I souped at 27°C "cold tap" rather than chilled for 6 mins. Turns out dev was fine 🤷 and pushed it a few stops. Anyhow, I'm excited.

Uh oh, looks like I've started unconsciously influencing staff, peers and local friends into buying luxury watches, often similar models to mine. That means it's time to switch to obsure brands and unloved vintage models. Loving the sparkly wrist roll on this Omega though.

My bronze Steeldive SD1970 now has some age on it. The patina tones it down well and shows it's not gold-plated. That said, I wouldn't use it in a pool and would even recommend giving it a rinse after salt water exposure.

It has some wrist presence. It draws the eyes of admirers but not thieves. In case you're wondering, it cost $179, with free shipping and the NH35A movement alone costs $45 these days. It's affordable by most.

The cushion case and rounded caseback makes it supremely comfortable to wear.

Oxidisation increases contrast as it doesn't wear off in the nooks and crannies, like aged silver, or a brassed camera.

The buckle tarnished first. Maybe it's a slightly different alloy to the case and crown. Contact points have buffed back to less oxidised bronze.

If you want a Rolex Explorer II ish watch but aren't keen on the $10k+ second hand market price, I think a Watchdives Pioneer WD16570B V2 with an automatic Hangzhou 6460 Hi-Beat (28,800 bph) movement is a better bet than the $5k Tudor and will only cost you $169 from the factory.

Comparing the Rolex 216570 to the Tudor 79470. The visuals say it all. But then the Rolex costs 2-3x as much as the Tudor new and 4x second hand. The Tudor Black Bay Pro is a good watch but won't scratch the itch if you wanted an Explorer II.

Watch size vs wrist size. I have a 7 1/4" inch wrist. My ideal case diameter is 40.5mm, but it all depends on the watch, what clothes I'm wearing with it and what I'm using it for. Also, how the watch lugs and bracelet drapes. See Alt text for details and examples.

A Rolex Sub at 41mm is great; it's ideal on me for a luxury watch.

The Tudor Pelagos in 42mm is big, but on the small end of ideal with a wet suit. The BB58 at 38mm feels casual. This BB54 at 37mm is fine in a vintage sports/diver or dress watch, but I wouldn't want something tool-like.

I find I can wear even smaller like 33mm in a vintage dress watch, or up to 45mm over a wetsuit.

The Bolo is the Philippines' general utility knife and a national symbol. Back in 2010, I forged a modern version with some safety upgrades.

My friend Eduardo Tolentino, an Aeta (native jungle dwelling people) using the Bolo I made for him. The edge geometry and balance was so perfect that you had to reduce the strength of the blow to avoid slicing straight through thick bamboo.

On the pavement outside NAIA

It's meaningful to me because I've been injured a bunch in the Philippines in the past doing extreme sports (including two shoulder dislocations) and yet here I am, safely on my way home again.

I'm not superstitious and religious, or this would be an omen and a warning from God not to board my flight.
