Not a new subject; they are trying to get Refugio State beach park off the Gaviota coast for a company called “Sable”. There’s been a ongoing fight for several years between Santa Barbara County who denied a permit of proposal by Sable to begin drilling again. Pipeline was shutdown due to oil spill.

A California tortoiseshell butterfly resting in sand. The wings have ragged edges and the dorsal (upper) sides of the wings are orange with black spots and a wide black margin. The undersides (ventral) of the wings are a mottled dark brown.

A tiny butterfly known as a marine blue displaying the ventral (underside) of its wings which oddly enough are not blue! They have a mottled stripe like pattern in caramel brown and off white colors. The hind wings have eyespots that are black spots framed by yellow with a touch of blue. Have a great day!

New to my pollinator garden is this sticky monkey flower bush, a native of California. The flowers are white with lemon yellow centers and shaped like bells with softly ruffled edges. Hummingbirds and bees adore them!

A red admiral butterfly sips nectar from a cluster of tiny white flowers. The dorsal/backside of the wings are primarily black with a bright orange stripe running diagonally on the forewing with some white markings on the top side of the stripe. The hindwings also have some orange that frames the outer most edge of the wings and has tiny black dots with two blue eyes on each side. Have a great day!

For #caturday I made a “Soctopus”! It’s a great way to extend the life of old socks. My cats of yesteryear loved these and I’m hoping Luna will too.

An old green sock becomes a cat toy; simply cut tentacles starting at the ankle/calf area to the heel and attach the foot portion to a wand with string.

Is it Fritillary #Friday of #butterflyweek yet? Here’s something to help you look on the sunny side of life!

A gulf fritillary butterfly sips nectar on a lantana flower in the warmth of bright sunshine. The butterfly is primarily pumpkin orange with silvery white oblong markings on the underside of the wings and black veins on the topside with a few small roundish white spots on the topside forewing.

A small butterfly known as a tailed copper drawing nectar from small white, pinkish flowers. The angle shows the underside which is gray with black spots on the forewing and the hindwing has black scrawls and a band of submarginal white crescents. Both sexes have tails.

A monarch butterfly rests upon a bush with tiny white flowers. It’s a male as denoted by the black spots on the hind wings. Primarily orange, it has black trim around the edges of the wings as well as the veins that run through the wings. The outer edge black trim has white dots also.
