Text graphic: It is easy to understand or frame the end of socialism or communism as a direct transition towards democracy. But like most things in life, that does not go nearly far enough to understand the multi-faceted upheavals and consequences of such a radical change. If we think about states and regions like Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Poland or even East Germany, there is often terminology involved like "keeping up" (with the West for example) or "backwardness". This sounds a lot like colonial key-/'buzz'words and results in the question: Can Postsocialism be colonial?
That is the very interesting main question of the Resident Group "Postcolonial and Postsocialist Interdependencies Across Borders" that worked at ZiF from April to July '26.

The Center for Interdisciplinary Research (ZiF) and the Institute for Studies of Science (ISOS) have jointly organized this lecture series to explore interdisciplinarity in both theory and practice.

Text graphic: Interdisciplinarity in Scientific Research - Perspectives from Practice and Science Studies | This lecture series brings together theoretical reflections and practical experiences on interdisciplinarity in scientific research. The field of Science Studies has long examined the conditions, forms, and implications of interdisciplinary work. Historians, sociologists, and philosophers of science address questions such as: What distinguishes interdisciplinary from multidisciplinary research? How is knowledge integrated across disciplinary boundaries? How do interdisciplinary fields emerge and stabilize? How do researchers navigate conflicting methods, standards, and epistemic cultures in collaborative settings? The series connects these theoretical debates with insights from research, funding, and institutional practice. It highlights interdisciplinary projects in which scholars develop innovative approaches to collaboration and design measures to foster interdisciplinary competencies. The lecture series also offers perspectives on how funding organizations design and implement formats that promote and sustain interdisciplinary research, as well as on how research institutes host, structure, and actively support such collaboration.

Moving beyond the conventional framing of the 'war on drugs', the workshop looks at how state-driven narratives and surveillance practices reinforce stigmas around class, gender, and race, while often overlooking the everyday realities of people involved in these economies.

This international and interdisciplinary workshop brings together scholars from sociology, anthropology, history, political science, geography, and gender studies to confront some of the most urgent methodological challenges of social sciences and humanities.
