Chicago’s Community Commission for Public Safety and Accountability are holding their monthly meeting tonight at the Copernicus Center on the city’s northwest side

While speakers thanked attendees for showing up, they called for more people to show up and protest the continued police violence impacting cities across the country.

Though the protest was small, police were seen across the street.

Speakers compared the death to recent fatal shootings committed by federal immigration agents. They also called attention to systemic police violence inflicted by CPD.

Chicagoans came to the Broadview ICE facility to hold a funeral procession for the 118 people who have died at the hands of federal immigration enforcement since 2018. This comes after 52-year-old father Lorenzo Salgado Araujo was fatally shot by ICE agents on Tuesday morning.

In 2020, as Dajuan Gates was having a medical emergency and dying in the back of a Forest Park police car, Miller accused him of faking his symptoms, telling him to “stop playing games,” according to a lawsuit. Gates died, with the whole incident taking place feet away from a hospital.

Forest Park Police Lt. Daniel Miller will not be charged by North Riverside PD for yanking a woman from her car at gun point and arresting her, out of uniform, out of his jurisdiction and wearing a Trump jersey. He’s on paid admin leave. This is not the first time Miller has been accused of abuse.

This is how the CCPSA meeting ended at 8:00 pm. One thing to note, the question of how CPD officers are trained in accordance with the Welcoming City Ordinance or how they are trained to interact with federal law enforcement was not answered tonight.

Superintendent Snelling is now having a discussion with CCPSA commissioners. Snelling said he will “stand by” his officers. He is telling the audience they don’t have an understanding of the laws or police training in order to make these complaints.

Public comment is taking place. Many are criticizing CPD’s lack of investigation into the shootings and crimes committed by federal immigration agents, the lack of accountability for CPD that violated the Welcoming City Ordinance, and how long it took for this meeting to be scheduled.
