Amnesty EU
@amnestyeu
We are @ European Institutions Office! We advocate towards the EU & Council of Europe for human rights for all.
With the RSF now laying siege to El Obeid and reportedly preparing a ground offensive, the international community must not allow the atrocities documented in El Fasher to be repeated in El Obeid.
Amnesty’s Afghanistan researcher @zasultani.bsky.social is in Brussels to meet with Belgian authorities and EU institutions, alongside @hrw.org's @fereshtaabbasi.bsky.social and @theecre.bsky.social, to highlight the grave risks and persecution that people returned to Afghanistan would face 🧵
Members of @europarl.europa.eu should do in Beijing what they have done in Brussels: show that Europe stands with those who stand on the side of human rights. We’re watching. (4/4)
Digital disinformation has often spilled over into physical violence. In March, Andrie Yunus was the victim of an acid attack. He had been targeted by online campaigns portraying him as a “foreign agent” for helping lead peaceful protests against revisions to the Military Law.
This is not an isolated incident. Last year the LCG, which has long been responsible for reckless and violent conduct, twice fired live ammunition at @en.sea-watch.org ships.
@amnesty.org's @sarahmcneer.bsky.social spoke in @europarl.europa.eu DROI Committee on China's new Ethnic Unity Law. This law codifies existing rights-violating law, policy and practice - threatening people’s rights in China and beyond. (1/8)
Is the EU finally ready to listen? 21 April could be a decisive moment to finally suspend the EU Israel trade agreement. Germany and Italy hold the key. Tell Friedrich Merz and Giorgia Meloni to suspend the agreement NOW. Sign 👉 www.amnesty.org/en/petition/...
The EU and its member states must urgently act to: 👉Protect civilians 👉Condemn violations by all warring parties, urging them to cease attacks against civilians 👉Champion justice & accountability 👉Support Sudanese civilians, rights defenders, civil society & journalists
Amnesty & 30 NGOs call on the EU to act following Israel's adoption of a death penalty law that will de facto apply exclusively to Palestinians. EU has a clear stance against the death penalty & must immediately suspend the EU-Israel Association Agreement. www.amnesty.eu/news/death-p...
👉EU member states have rolled back respect for rights & the rule of law, affecting the rights of people, including refugees & migrants, across Europe & at its borders 👉Rights defenders, activists & civil society increasingly face restrictions, smear campaigns & criminalization
👉India weaponizes repressive laws against peaceful dissent, harassing & detaining rights defenders, journalists & civil society 👉Abusive, discriminatory laws & policies persist alongside punitive demolition of Muslim homes despite a Supreme Court ruling & calls by UN experts
Unconscionable to see @ec.europa.eu & European Defence Agency as partners of the BEDEX Arms Fair taking place now in Brussels, alongside main sponsor Lockheed Martin which proudly contributes to Israel's arms industry with fighter jets used for deadly military operations in the Gaza Strip.
As @amnesty.org, we want to remind @vonderleyen.ec.europa.eu & EU leaders that human rights is the foundation of the rules-based order. Double standards and selective application of international law leave Europe more vulnerable, less credible and undermines its very raison d'être (1/2)

BREAKING: @europarl.europa.eu LIBE committee greenlights punitive detention and deportation plans. Parliament’s position follows chaotic & rushed negotiations with a new text presented by @eppgroup.bsky.social just days ago that lacks adequate scrutiny, consultations or human rights assessments.
Participants discussed the extensive implications of the proposal – including for non-refoulement, access to rights & alternative permits, protection from arbitrary detention in the EU & third countries – and urged EU institutions to avoid measures that violate international law.
Insightful discussion on the human rights risks in the EU’s return proposal at a panel organized by @amnestyeu.bsky.social & OHCHR Europe, in collaboration with @ceps.eu & @picumofficial.bsky.social, bringing together policymakers from across EU institutions, UN experts, civil society & academics.
As @evegeddie.bsky.social stated yesterday, @amnesty.org’s research & evidence show return hubs cannot be human rights compliant. They risk arbitrary detention in third countries, violating the right to liberty, protection from torture & refoulement, and leaving people in prolonged limbo.
Today EU and Angolan ministers meet in Brussels - an opportunity for both sides to act to curb spyware abuses. A recent @amnesty.org investigation underlines the real-world cost of the development, sale and use of spyware technologies.
Murder, torture, gang rape, abductions, forced displacement & recruitment of children by M23. Killings, rape & abduction by Wazalendo (armed groups partly supported by the DRC army). All documented by the UN & rights organizations, well known to EU officials. How many more?
A very engaging conversation with @ec.europa.eu & @europarl.europa.eu trainees at Amnesty International’s European Institutions Office. We discussed @amnestyeu.bsky.social’s advocacy work and exchanged views on how to advance and strengthen human rights in the EU.
Israel’s genocide against Palestinians in the illegally occupied Gaza Strip is continuing, including through the protracted obstruction of humanitarian aid, now further compounded by Israel’s new registration rules for international NGOs.🧵#FAC
Aloys Bigirumwami, Bahati Nshangalume and Patient Basimike Bukombe Barhuze are Congolese men from eastern DRC. They are just 3 of countless people forcibly disappeared by fighters from Rwanda-backed M23 armed group in the midst of the current armed conflict. (2/4)
With the EU-India Summit starting tomorrow, @amnestyeu.bsky.social Director @evegeddie.bsky.social says "it’s a crucial moment for two key global players to get their own houses in order on human rights and to prioritize them across all areas of their relations".
Today, the 27 EU Heads of States meet in Brussels & will discuss the ‘Middle East’. Israel’s genocide against Palestinians in Gaza continues unabated despite the ‘ceasefire’, as Israel continues to restrict the entry of medical & reconstruction supplies and electricity.
Good news! Today, the European Parliament voted in favour of the My Voice, My Choice EU-wide abortion access initiative. This scheme would be a significant step in addressing inequalities in access to abortion care. Now, the @ec.europa.eu must turn this momentum into concrete action.
This week, the European Parliament votes on the My Voice My Choice European Citizens’ Initiative. We encourage all MEPs to support this voluntary - opt-in, and non-binding mechanism to address persistent inequalities in access to abortion care across the EU.
Next Monday EU Foreign Ministers discuss DRC as violence escalates. This week Uvira, 2nd largest town in South Kivu, fell to M23. Civilians are being killed, injured, displaced. The EU & member states must act with an urgency to match the seriousness of this ongoing conflict.
At an impressive event organised by @left.eu, Benham delivered this message to EU leaders: "As the EU considers policies that risk replicating Australia’s atrocities - I urge you to learn from Australia’s systematic torture of refugees."
"None of what I witnessed and experienced in offshore detention were isolated incidents. They were systemic, predictable, and preventable. They were designed to humiliate and destroy us," Benham told @europarl.europa.eu yesterday.
