Sometimes people got him to check over old tech they’d found in flooded buildings, sometimes those people were maybe possibly pirates, but who the fuck cared, it was money. The tech was illegal but so was half of what Fryx did, and kinda possibly what he was. Everyone was a criminal where Fryx lived, because it was too hard to survive without doing something that broke a law. There were a lot of laws and a lot of them were stupid or cruel and far too easy to break just by being a person, or really by being a person without any money. Like you weren’t allowed to piss on the street which seemed fine, but if you didn’t have somewhere to live and all the toilets charged to use them, where else were you supposed to piss? Sometimes it seemed like really, they just wanted it to be illegal to be poor and desperate.
There were probably a couple hundred Fryxes in his building alone, people like him, nobodies just trying to scrape something like survival out of the world. Probably millions in the city, if not more. It was a big city, covered nearly all of what wasn’t underwater and a lot of what was, all the way til you got to the Highlands, which had their own problems. So there were a lot of him, and it all could have happened to any of them. But it happened to Fryx, and that didn’t seem fucking fair, not really. Nothing was fair, though. Nothing was ever fair. So instead of why Fryx, why not Fryx? Why the fuck not?

#WIPSnips just got done rewriting this bit 'Heartbreak'

The dead piled and piled around the hill and the hill grew taller than them with every body. Roars came from within the opening.
“Oh hush,” Jamys called out. “Hush yourself, you have been fed well, and you do not need this man.”
There were almost words in the snarling. A desperate, yearning tone that made Barret want to weep and want to flee, all at once.
“You cannot have him,” Jamys said. “You have enough. I say so.” He turned back to Barret and put his hand on Barret's face, over the scar there. “I would not have you say yes unless you know what it means.”
“No,” Barret said. “No, I won't.” Not knowing what he was saying it to. Jamys' smile was real, sincere, heartbreakingly lovely. It was, Barret thought, the first true smile he'd ever seen on that face, and it wasn't even really happening.
“This is a dream,” he told Jamys. And since it was a dream, and he could do anything and nobody could hurt him for it, he turned his mouth into Jamys' palm and kissed it.
“Of a kind,” Jamys agreed.
Then he woke, exhausted, his body feeling like he'd done a forced march and fought for hours after.
He remembered what he had done last night. He remembered it well.

all first draft stuff EXTREMELY likely to change a lot, but I'm feeling pretty confident about the voice on it

It took him hours to get into it, most of a night before he had to leave it marinating and go to legal job number one on no sleep and a lot of stims, where his manager sneered at him and told him to buck up his ideas. They didn’t even have to pay him more than a bare pittance at that one because it was a TWS job and TWS owned him, what did they expect from him?
And when he got back he ended up calling in sick to legal job number two because it still wasn’t done. He wouldn’t get paid but by now he was planning to put an extra zero on his final charge for this job, which would more than make up for it.
Then he got into the thing. And looked deeper into the data.
Then he shut it down, said “Fuck,” aloud, and wished he’d never taken the stupid job. He called the client and told her over the phone she should pay him, forget the whole thing, and then pay him extra to drop the brick in the nearest acid bath and hope that was enough. But by then it was too fucking late, because Fryx was good but it turned out that even 3 decade old GallowGate security triggers were still better than him.
Because as he was telling her that over her actual honest-to-fuck handheld phone, blurry image jerking around nauseatingly on his visual HUD, someone shot her in the head at the exact same time armed men kicked in his door. But then, what did he expect from hacking something GallowGate and Thames Chrysalis worked on together?
He hadn’t even got that deep into it, he thought bitterly, as they forced him onto his belly with guns pointed at his head. He’d seen just enough to know he didn’t want to see any more. Fuck all of this. They cuffed his hands behind his back, hard enough it’d bruise if he lived through this, and someone took the chance to put a boot in his ribs before they dragged him into a blacked out helicopter on the roof.
Fryx was in real, real trouble now.

You joke but

He lived right on the edge, where city decayed into swampland. Beyond that the Norfolk archipelagos, just visible from his window when there wasn’t a haze of yellow, smoggy air between him and them. His flat was little more than a niche in the wall. All his furniture folded down, from his bed to sofa. The mechanisms broke often, but he was good at fixing them. It breached his rental agreement, but his landlord was a a particularly poorly coded AI that he’d bypassed the third day of living here. The rent was hard-coded in somewhere with much better security, or he’d have bypassed that, too. It was a place to sleep, to shower when it was his building’s turn with the hot water ration and strip wash when it wasn’t, and to occasionally bring home big stupid men who never fucked him as well as he wanted.

The rush of shame and guilt made him feel sick.
As he stared, unable to believe what he'd just done, Jamys reached back between his legs to scoop up what Barret had left there. He came up to his knees, holding his hand in the air. Spreading his fingers so that the seed stretched and dripped between them, before he made eye contact with Barret over his shoulder. He smiled again, that wicked cruel smirk, and licked the seed off. His eyes slipped closed in something like bliss.
Barret's heart pounded, a war drum.
"I knew you wanted me," Jamys said.
Barret fled. Jamys' laughter followed him all the way.

OK, done with writing for the day. Barret now knows Jamys is trans, and is being Normal about it. Quite like this, tbh.

“If you say I am a woman,” he said, conversationally, “I will put another scar on your handsome face.”
“But,”
“It is very clear to you I am not,” Jamys said. He took a step towards Barret, movement slow, predatory. His voice turned cruel. “For, if I were, you would not still want to fuck me, would you?”
Anger removed everything else.
“Fuck you,” Barret said, and hit him in the mouth.
Jamys reeled back, put his hand to his mouth. It came back bloodied. He laughed. “Do that again,” he said. “It only proves me right.” He spat blood onto the earth. “Of course,” he said, “if you tell others of this, they may wonder why you were following me in the dark, might they not?”
He didn't sound afraid at all. He sounded like he was sure Barret wouldn't say a word.
He was very close. So close. The smell of him wrapping round Barret like a lover's arms. Blood on his teeth.

#Sffchat Barret that's gay

This close, Barret could see the thick curl of Jamy's eyelashes. Astonishing. Girls would have ripped them from his eyelids and stuck them to their own. Black, tipped with dark gold, like a bee covered in pollen, and curled upwards like a cows.
He rolled the sleeves of his shirt up, revealing his strong forearms, thick with brown hair and heavily freckled. The stark knobbly bones of his wrists. Hands, long clever fingers. How he might touch, how he might be touched.
Under that shirt he'd be all sharp hipbones and broad ribcage. Barret would be able to trace the bumps of his spine through the skin. His shirt rode up, and Barret saw the long dark trail of hair from his bellybutton, disappearing into his trews. He wanted to know what it tasted like. He wanted to know what Jamys felt like inside. Jamys ran so hot, those times he'd touched Barret on the shoulder, he must be burning inside.
