Lazuli Bunting for #Blue theme of #BirdOfTheDay. My local area is in their summer range, but I rarely see one.

Bird on a dry stalk with blurry Coast Sunflowers in the background. The subject has a bright turquoise blue face, a brick red upper breast that fades to white on the lower belly. Just a bit of the blue wing is showing as the bird faces the viewer, leaning towards the right of the frame.

A young Least Tern chases a parent, seemingly in hope of getting a fish. The parent declined. #SingersAndWingers #BirdOfTheDay #ECK 🪶

Parent: “Get your own fish! You’re old enough to fish for yourself.”

Two Least Terns flying, with a parent in the lead that has a small fish in its bill. Both are mostly white with black around the crown of the head; the adult has a much more crisply defined black crown with a white forehead.

Fiery Skipper on Coyote Mint bloom. Despite the warm temps & lack of rain, we’ve still got a few blooms in my area. #ButterflyWeek.

A small butterfly with different tints of rusty orange on its abdomen and wings is foraging on a purple bloom that has a green center. The skipper has large dark brown eyes. Its back is not visible, but in contrast to the wings is an olive green color.

Young bird with black body, having white wing patches, and a white face. Since it’s a 1st year bird, it has a red wash on its crown. Adult males have a white crown with a red patch at the back; adult females have no red. This juvie is sitting on the limb of a pine tree with a blurry green background. Its bill is slightly open as it calls to a parent outside the frame.

All four grebelings still around this morning, noticeably losing their pajama stripes at this point. 🪶 #babybirds Have a good weekend, everyone!

Four baby Pied-billed Grebes with now grayish bodies but still having their black & white pajama stripes on heads and necks, plus the peachy colored bills and peachy stripe across the crown. There's also an adult PB Grebe in close supervision. Water looks faintly rippled and greenish, partly from foliage reflection and partly from algae bloom.

A spark bird for me too!! Just after I got my first bridge camera back in 2016, I was out walking on a foggy December morning, came around a corner and saw this beauty perched no more than 10' above the ground and probably no more than 15' away. 🪶

Red-shouldered Hawk viewed from the front. It has rusty feathers on its front with white barring below the upper breast. The wings have a black and ivory checkerboard pattern and the tail has black & ivory stripes.

Osprey flyby for #BirdOfTheDay theme of #WidMotion

Osprey with wings out, flying somewhat above my POV, so the underside is visible. Face is almost white with a dark patch behind the bird’s eye. The belly is mostly white; wings and tail have alternating light brown & dark brown stripes. The feet are tucked under the tail. The osprey has a long hooked bill.

A couple of my favorite #Quackers for #BirdOfTheDay - Hooded Mergansers.

Male Hooded Merganser, with black head feathers floofed & white head patch prominently displayed. He has a black needle like bill, black with white stripes on his back, and brown tweedy pattern on his sides. He has bright gold eyes.

Ms. Hooded Merganser has floofy reddish head feathers and a gold needle like bill. Otherwise she is mostly brown with white patches under her wings and on her belly. She’s mostly out of the water, flapping her wings, which are back & out. Her tail is flared upward to help balance her. She has rusty red eyes.

Green Heron launches a hunt for the next fish; he/she is an expert at #TheArtOfSurvival #BirdOfTheDay 🪶

Bird with teal feathers on its wings, a dark brick red on its neck, dark teal on its crown, and bright yellow eyes. Its bill is fairly long and stabby, its legs & feet are yellow. It is in mid air, with only the left foot in contact with a fallen log and it leaps/dives forward into a pond covered in duckweed.

Once again it's cloudy at the horizon for full moon in my area, so here's a shot from spring this year. #crows #birds #fullmoon #ECK

A full moon that's just a few degrees above horizon & still somewhat golden is framed by bare trees with 8 crows perched on the leafless branches. The sky is fairly dark; trees and 8 crows are silhouetted.

Subject has peachy orange color on body and under his tail, with a thick black band at the end of the tail. Under the wings, which are out as he slows down to land, is a black and white checkered pattern. He has black and white stripes down his face, and slate blue in his crown. Just below and to his left is the top of a snag where he will land. In the background is blue skies.

So the Pied-billed Grebes had FIVE grebelings this week… I thought we would have doubly cute #grebewatertaxi but apparently parents decided 5 are too many for water taxi & are just making these tiny guys swim from day one. 🤨🪶

Stripey Pied-billed Grebe baby (aka: grebeling, a completely unscientific Bluesky nickname) opens its mouth as a parent swims toward it with a small fish. Both are in water.
