A final haul of pastries from the fabulous local Sejers Konditori in Sorø. Farewell Denmark, you've fed us well!
Picked some more blackberries from the woods outside our Danish holiday cabin, and thought - I know, I'll make a crumble! 🫐
More smørrebrød action at Roskilde's lovely park café, Pipers Hus - curried herring, potato salad and breaded plaice. 🌳
Still eating our way through Copenhagen - loving the tacos at Hija de Sanchez in the meatpacking district.🌵
Tucking into some super smørrebrød at Copenhagen's Kronborg restaurant. 🐟
Warm sunny days in Copenhagen, so cooling off at Ismageriet for some smooth creamy scoops of peanut chocolate caramel gelato over sour cherry. 🌞
Picked some blackberries outside our Danish holiday cabin in the woods. Perfect for putting on porridge, along with cinnamon, honey and hazelnuts. 🐻 🥣🌳
First cardamom bun of our Danish trip! (one of many, I hope!). From the wonderful, unassuming Sejers Konditori, Sorø. 🥨
Chicken parma foccacia sandwich at Vauxhall's Italo Italian deli. 🌞
Off to Denmark soon - would love to hear tips on cafés/bakeries/cheap eats in or near Copenhagen. Thank you! 🙏
Cooling down with scoops of vanilla ice cream, a splash of Pedro Ximénez, and a sprinkle of broken-up 'cornflake caramel peanut bars' that my youngest made with grandma.🍨
Loved the way they presented the life & times of Manchester’s Jewish community, including the use of personal testimony. Also impressed by its emphasis on inclusivity, not least in a section on the Jewish LGBTQ+ community, and hearing of its endeavours to reach out across various local communities.
The first anniversary of Mum's passing, and so up in Manchester to spend time with family. After the cemetery, we visited Manchester Jewish Museum, housed in a former Sephardi synagogue, where Mum used to work as a volunteer and teach local schoolchildren...
Highlight of my week - Marie Mitchell x Dr Jessica Harris in a beautifully rich discussion on food heritage, and how it connects across continents and generations. Part of the Fortnum & Mason Kitchen Stories series.
Always a treat visiting Lahpet in Covent Garden, London. Fabulous Burmese food including their signature lahpet thoke (tea leaf salad), pe palata (yellow pea flatbread), braised beef curry and ohn no kauk swé (chicken and noodles in a rich coconut broth). 🌿
Been a year since my beautiful mum passed away. Have been thinking about her all week: her smile and her sayings and her big, warm heart. It's still hard to think she's no longer here. Lighting the yahrzeit candle, and thinking of the light she gave to us and everyone around her. Love you, mum. x
Celebrating the end of exams with my boys at South London's fabulous Katsuro. Their chicken katsu sando has to be one of my all-time favourite London sandwiches. 🥪
Catching up with an old friend over a fabulous Lebanese feast at Fairuz. All classic dishes, and each one absolutely spot on - silky smoky mutabbal (aubergine dip), a stunningly punchy hummus, musakaa (tomatoes, aubergine, garlic), warak inab (vine leaves). Plus a beautiful muhallabia for dessert. 🔥
Homemade gooseberry crumble cake. My usual go-to with gooseberries is to make a crumble. But with the heat and all, I thought, why not cake? And with @nigelslater.bsky.social's fabulous recipe, you get the best of both! 🍈
The manuscript for 'Friday Night Chicken' has now been submitted, and off to the copyeditor it goes! What an adventure all this is. Now celebrating with some homemade kuchen - a specifically Manchester Jewish bake, a bit like babka, laced with cinnamon and replete with a glacé cherry on top. 🍒
Fabulous lunch at Knepp Wilding kitchen, whose produce comes from the @kneppwilding.bsky.social estate. Followed by a guided walk around this inspiring project - encountering wild pigs, cattle, storks and a landscape shaped by reintroduced beavers. 🌿
It's also really lovely that, whilst I was making it, so was my friend @akatzkennedy.bsky.social - kindly helping me out with the recipe testing, as we ended up messaging back-and-forth with the latest apple cake updates!
Made my great-grandma Beck's apple cake today. It's the first time I've ever baked it (road-testing it for my book!), but my late mum used to make it regularly, and especially at Rosh Hashanah time. It has certainly stirred up some very dear memories of them both. 🍏
Saying farewell to my Canadian aunt, before she flies back. It's been an emotive visit to Manchester, but also special to spend quality time with family. And especially over good food, like it always is at Lupo. Fried courgette flowers, tonnarelli cacio e pepe & their generous slice of millefoglie.
With a sky full of the sunshine that my mum once so deeply loved, we were again joined at the graveside by our loving family and friends. After unveiling the stone, we remembered my beautiful mum, her kind and generous soul, and all the wonderful and special things that she gave to the world. 🌸
Loved this rich, thought-provoking discussion on the diversity of Jewish culinary heritage, from Eastern Europe to Iraq to North London. Beautiful reflections on food as memory, identity, connection and resilience. Thank you Adrienne Katz Kennedy, Alissa Timoshkina, Helen Graham & Linda Dangoor!
Celebrating my grandmother-in-law's 101st birthday with a beautiful pistachio and Turkish delight cheesecake, made by my mother-in-law. 🎂
It's been quite a week, on various fronts. Just glad to be with family, as we gather around the table for Friday night chicken. Shabbat shalom, and peace to all and everyone. ❤️
