I write math software for a living. I ride bikes for fun. Both bikes and math are awesome but software is kinda horrible also at @3j0hn@mathstodon.xyz
If you ever find yourself driving north from Milwaukee, the amazing restrooms at the Kohler Art Center in Sheboygan are worth a stop
I did a ride on my birthday to celebrate turning an age. I cramped so bad I could hardly walk. The next day my friends invited me to bike to the top of a mountain to drink beers. I couldn't really refuse that, and somehow I made it (same amount of climbing but only 8 miles 💀). Anyway, still alive.
I love to buy the weird stuff at my local Grocery Outlet but some things I just can't
It wasn't totally necessary to save 32g of weight on my camping hammock, but it was very satisfying to learn how to make locked brummel splices in dyneema cord
Oh man, opened an ebook today with this in the front matter and it took me all the way back to 1988 - none of my friends ever seemed to read a book with a cover since everyone had a relative who worked in retail who rescued "destroyed" paperbacks
Sad that no one wanted to fight me on "second best". Maybe I should have declared that butter tarts are Canada's first best dessert, and see where that goes.
Lately, I've been relaxing by printing and hand-painting models of my local mountains made with TouchTerrain touchterrain.geol.iastate.edu these are very satisfying to make and extremely cool looking in person - and chonky 8"x8"x2" and weigh nearly a pound each.
Thanks to 3D printing, my sons and I can now instantiate all the stupid jokes that pop into our heads
It was great to get out and see @themountaingoats.bsky.social on the last day of the current US tour. NGL there were tears in my eyes when they played "This Year" because, my friends, it has been a year. But we will make it through.
Yesterday I finished the 24th and final Parker book. Highly recommended for reading and looking great on a shelf
I wear a lot of hats. This weekend, it was an MWBA hardhat for a morning of clearing slides from a beloved trail damaged in the Eaton Fire. It's always a privilege to get access to closed parts of the forest, and we worked hard to make sustainable fixes to these trails. www.mwba.org/updates/mwba...
I love the richness of terms for underwear in Canada (from this piece about the author of the Oxford Canadian dictionary www.nytimes.com/2021/05/21/w...)
I am worried that these big cuts at JPL will reduce our ability to deal with lifeforce vampires from Haley's comet
There are lots of bad things about reddit, but I love that there is someone dedicated to tracking knot identification requests on r/knots to keep track of how often people ask to identify the simplest possible knot.
While #MathSky doesn't seem to get quite as excited about new shapes as Mathstodon does over on the Fediverse, you still might want to know it's not too hard to construct this shape. I do it in Maple here: www.mapleprimes.com/art/42-The-N... I should probably 3D print a vase or pen holder...
Zooming in, here is a 1:1 lift of set of Properties Pink and Orange. Same money/fan values in both games, same paired "Rent" card, and two sided "wild" card. There are a couple extra properties, and 2-3 small tweaks to others in the copycat game - like the level of changes you'd make in a 2nd ed
We felt the need to actually lay the cards out together and at first I was worried that it was an identical 1:1 copy number and all. But it turns out there are a few minor differences in properties, and a handful of new actions
This birthday gift from my family is a hefty arcane tome. Every field has one of these: a magic manual where you can flip to a random page and learn something new. An ebook can never replace the joy of doing that
