My metal detector sweeps back and forth through the rising coastal fog, its steady rhythm slowing my breath. I haven't found much-just a couple of bottle caps and a crusty dime. I look up and pause. My feet sink into the cool, wet sand. The world has disappeared.

What the hell is going on,
Does anybody know?
I couldn't really concentrate,
Was staring at my toe.
It leans a little crooked—
Hmm, what's up with that?
And compared to all the others,
It's kind of plump and fat.
What was that you're saying?
I should be looking close?
What am I supposed to see?
That zit upon your nose?
What are you referring to?
And why is there a rat?
And why is there a mummy of
A saber-toothed big cat?
Kitty has a weird toe too-
It looks like one too many.
That cat should really have a name;
I think I'll call him Lenny.
What? I didn't raise my hand...
Oh crap, don't call on me.
Are you asking for my thoughts
On cat biology?
You know you have a weird toe too,
It's bulging out your shoe.

Summer fires, a new disease
