One-time Aussie grade cricketer, now an umpire. Historian of armies, empire, espionage, cartography & cricket. @flemingrob.bsky.social for history content. London & Tasmania/lutruwita. Born on the traditional lands of the Palawa/Pakana people.
A legend lost to the world, but his memory will live on, especially whenever anyone thinks about hitting six 6s.
The Flight-Lieutenant RM Mitchell, RAAF 120 Sqn, was Australian pilot Richard Menzies Mitchell (407092); he was torpedoed on a boat to the UK, took a lifeboat to Africa & was captured by the Vichy French before escaping from POW camp. He listed cricket in his interest in his biographical details!
England's 250 off 20 has strong Shane Warne/Brian Lara Cricket '99 played on easy vibes.
Amazing scenes at Lord's as former England women from across the years got to ring the bell for the first women's test match at the ground - long overdue, and beautifully celebrated.
Well today has been a lovely reminder of how enjoyable out ground Vitality Blast cricket can be; how the Hundred is a needless thorn in county cricket's foot; ...but mostly a reminder of how badly run Middlesex cricket club has been over the last several years.
Glorious village cricket vibes as Vitality Blast cricket returns to Richmond's Old Deer Park for Middlesex vs Durham.
Massive corruption - clear Aus penalty for ankle tapping in the 62nd completely ignored. Just like South Korea in 2002 FIFA are clearly instructing refs to favour hosts. Bollocks result. uSA handed a freebie. Also no coincidence that Infantino was at Aus v Tur to see which side needed suppressing.
Very notable that Infantino was scouting the #AusvsTurk game to scout which team he had to help USA get past. #FIFAWorldacup #CorruptionWorldCup
Somewhat bizarre how none of the US TV crews, VAR or any of the officials saw this blatant ankle tap in the 62nd minute which should have been an Aus penalty. #USAvsAus
Effing BBC. They have such an anti-Australia bias in sports they've deliberately put Australia in third place when we haven't played yet — despite it being the norm in all sports tables, the Premier League, Olympics, and even their own 3rd place ranking table below, to remain in alphabetical order!
Taken from @thegrumbler.bsky.social's newsletter (because I refuse to exist on a SM platform whose owner unashamedly does Nazi salutes in public), this is partly (mostly) the fault of the ECB's deliberate sabotage of county/the blast, and partly the awful management Middlesex have ensured recently.
Well. Slightly sobering stuff as reported in @thegrumbler.bsky.social's latest County Cricket Newsletter... Surrey, Middlesex & despite their small ground (+lack of a Hundred franchise) Somerset; all doing gangbusters by county cricket crowd standards...
A second reboot, and Pele's old New York Cosmos is alive again! www.espn.com/football/mat...
Jordan Silk and Kurtis Patterson pose with the Dean Jones Trophy in Hobart ahead of today's One Day Cup final.
Ah, takes me back to Shane Warne '99... Guaranteed 300+ scores in 20-over games before T20 was a thing.
Tassie Devils have revealed their first playing jumper ahead of their VFL debut, and I have to say I like it - the new logo prominent across the myrtle, primrose and rose colours which stretch back to the 19th Century. And a change jersey of the same design on white. tasmaniafc.com/news/devils-...
A wonderful celebration of three storied clubs to mark the 175 anniversary of Hong Kong Cricket Club. A triangular tournament featuring HKCC, the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), and the Melbourne Cricket Club (MCC)! Wish I could be there!
Australian Winter Olympic medallists so far from the Milano Cortina Gold medallist Jakara Anthony, Josie Baff and Cooper Woods along with Matt Graham (bronze) and Scotty James (silver).
Italy might not have gotten there in the end but boy did they put the wind up England there, and have absolutely announced they deserve to be on the big stage of world cricket. They have also come a long way since I watched them beat Denmark in the Euro T20 Championships at Brighton in July 2013.
I won't spoil the quiz by writing the answer, but I will point out the picture used that is of Bellerive Oval in Tasmania, is 15,297 km (9505 miles) away from the correct answer.
Discovery Channel multi-sport view might be the absolute best way to watch all the Winter Olympics sports you have no idea about.
In 1926, just a mere hundred years ago, Australia toured England for the 26th Ashes series (🇦🇺10-15🏴). They had won three in a row and debuted the talented Woodfull (2,300 at 43.00) who would go on to form one of the great partnerships with Ponsford. There were four draws but England took the fifth.
47% female participation in the #WinterOlympics26 in Milano-Cortina. The most gender-balanced Winter Games in history.
Starc has had an excellent series with 31 wickets. And remembering the great series bowlers: 🏴J Laker - 46 (1956) 🇦🇺T Alderman - 42 (1981) 🇦🇺R Hogg - 41 (1978/79) 🇦🇺T Alderman - 41 (1989) 🇦🇺S Warne - 40 (2005) 🏴A Bedser - 39 (1952) 🇦🇺D Lillee - 39 (1981) 🏴M Tate - 38 (1924/25) 🇦🇺M Johnson - 37 (2013/14)
It is my sincerest wish that the #Socceroos get to knock #USMNT out in the group stage and prevent any kind of inappropriate political use of the #FIFAWorldCup by the #FIFAPeacePrize winning regime-changer through military force.
