I even do this for fursuit building! Regardless, no matter what method you pick it's going to take practice and studying. Reference your favorite media for practice, listen to old cartoonists and animators interviews and art tutorials. But most importantly, let yourself have fun and explore!
Next, Understanding squash and stretch is a very vital skill in drawing facial expressions. Along with learning how to separate your characters face into segmented shapes. By learning this you can draw exaggerated features and still make them look natural! Here's a quick example on separate shapes
In my actual art style, I usually do an indent where the mouth should be. This method can be a little tricky since it requires you to have an understanding of how muzzles work on most genus of animals. I dont connect the mouth to the indent, this gives me more freedom to exaggerate the expression.
