Communicating better about the weaknesses and strengths of science, and being specific about how to improve it, and rejecting bad ideas, is the goal now. If your reform ideas happen to get mixed up with an OSTP that writes groveling propaganda like this, it's not time to celebrate, but to critique.

And here's another email from the DOE's Z-Division, which finds the science in the Yan Report 'credible'. It is tempting to believe that the government has top secret intelligence. In this case they were impressed by something so cringe that public conspiracy theorists are deeply embarrassed by it.
stalking this thread a bit, learning... I think you are operating on a more abstract and semantic level than many of us biologists are used to or enjoy, BUT: recently, there has been some shift in understanding host 'defense' genes as selfish elements themselves: journals.plos.org/plosbiology/...
Yeah I also don't know of any great solution here there. Here's an Opus 4.7 approach for you: gist.github.com/alexcritschr... it works *ok*, gets the numbering right in this case tho (this is *probably* a bad answer for you, but, nonetheless, thought it couldn't hurt to throw some slop at it)
I don't buy that it's really such a dichotomy myself... But it's an informative article and I think it's true that there are simply too many cows is probably a bigger problem than the cows aren't ecologically efficient enough. Good to try to fix both problems, though

I just caught this really interesting paper today. They obtained genomes for a new species of Treponema using genome-resolved metagenomics, associated with Noma diease:
We saw this on biorxiv last year, nice to see it published! I like their table of efficiency by strain - tough luck in some species, but still very cool.

Absolutely astounding paper. Massive 36,000 AA proteins facilitate cell-cell interactions in this bacterial symbiosis. Really beautiful scientific work.

Really crazy that these massive genes are 6% of the 1.5 Mbp genome in this bee gut symbiont:
e.g., when you see full reads in a sample mapping to one species' mtDNA, evenly spaced, with better mappings than to other species' mtDNA evenly across the genome, there's really no question what it is at the species or sub-species level, even if it's very few reads
methods are scaring me tho - kraken on full WGS databases is a very very fuzzy approach with only a semblance of reality 😅 re-analysis could be cool!
Good thread. Another issue with the editorial is overall NIH funding is not a good measure of success. That doesn't bring back global public health cuts, the lives lost, cancer trials disrupted, vaccine research ended, diversity grants eliminated, foreign subcontracts killed, or grants disrupted.
