Traffic engineers designed this road for speed, ignoring (intentional even?) that there is an elementary school and library here that attract people of all ages and abilities, not just abled drivers. No matter the posted limit, average speeds here are around 55. Kids in or out of a car risk death.
How many more children will die here? Zooming out, it is clearly a place where kids SHOULD be welcome! An elementary school on one corner, a library on another, and housing on the other. Why do we choose to build this place “for kids” to be so hostile to kids???? Why do we build car dependency?
The 15 year old was killed at this intersection. Even a casual observer can see it is designed for speed. - 3 forward lanes in every direction. - Every turning move is a conflict. - No bicycle protection whatsoever. - wide turning radius makes crosswalks dangerous.
