Ferris Bueller’s Day Off is 40! A beautifully constructed film, every jokes still lands. Alan Ruck’s virtuoso performance is peak comedic sidekick. The Twist and Shout reaching its crescendo as the Chicago parade goes full tilt is a perfect encapsulation of how exhilarating cinema can be.

I really love these two titles from the eighties LA-set teen comedy realm. There’s an endearingly scrappy nature to the direction of both, the soundtracks are beautifully curated but, crucially, the films crackle with heart, nuance and authenticity, despite the obvious garish era trappings.
Please, for the love of God, stop bestowing this guy with lofty titles. They're thoroughly undeserved.
