It’s apple abundance time in my yard so I made lots of apple sauce. 1) plain, 2) vanilla and 3) plum (because there are also a lot of plums). All very yum! 🍎 🍏 🍎 🍏

Happy Solstice. Today all the plums on my tiny prune plum tree said today is the 12hr harvest window. So I made plum jam. The house smells amazing. 😋
An often bold resident along high elevation trails in the West, the golden-mantled ground squirrel (Callospermophilus lateralis) forages for nuts, seeds, insects, eggs, and other available omnivorous fare. Adults typically live alone in long shallow burrows between 1200-3900m above sea level.
My coworker’s delight when I work in my home office is palpable. Although my work efficiency may improve once I get my hand back… Pi the Cat.

Going through the motions of living a normal life these days is hella hard. Trying to finish projects and wrap things up and meet deadlines. Trying to apply for jobs. But what even? Today I bought more herbs for the garden and repotted some houseplants. Cat took in some sun.
Our old refrigerator crapped out 2 weeks ago. Was turning everything to ice. Fruits glace anyone? 🍋❄️ Finally got a new refrigerator today. So nice to not be living out of a cooler and the office mini fridge anymore. Also glad to have found one that didn’t come with an app. 🙄

A fallen bit of lichen (Ramalina farinacea) from the canopy provides shelter and nourishment for an aggregation of moss mites (Oribatid: Brachypylina). It is as if the fallen lichen is bedecked with tiny jewels. 💎
It might only be the first of February, but the birds are already building. This little pair of bushtits (Psaltriparus minimus) are bringing in regular deliveries of lichen & fluff to line & camouflage their nest in the silk tassel tree (Garrya elliptica).
Ochrolechia oregonensis (pumpkin pie lichen for the tiny pie apothecia) on a strip of bark being munched by mites and a springtail. A complete tiny world on a fallen bit of canopy debris. Ochrolechia is a bioindicator, growing slowly in old growth forests in the Pacific Northwest.
A little Xystocheir dissecta (a type of millipede that lives in the soil and fluoresces under uv light) appears to glide over the ground. #backyardcreatures
