Attorney General William Tong
@agwilliamtong
Connecticut Attorney General, dad, fly fisher. Love food, especially local food.
Connecticut has lost a giant. John Droney was a mentor, trusted friend, and fearless advocate whose leadership shaped generations of public service.
Big win today. A federal judge temporarily halted the proposed Warner Bros. and Paramount merger while our lawsuit proceeds. This is a critical victory for consumers, for objective and independent journalism, and for the workers, actors, artists and fans of our country's film and tv industry.
Big win for Connecticut voters. A federal judge dismissed the Trump admin’s lawsuit seeking to force CT to hand over its statewide voter registration list. This was an illegal attempt to disenfranchise Connecticut voters and today, the court shut it down.
As of July 1, CT consumers have stronger rights when it comes to canceling subscriptions and memberships. Businesses don't get to profit by trapping consumers in subscriptions they no longer want. We’ll enforce the law against companies that don’t comply.
Eversource wants PURA to approve another rate hike that would increase the average residential electric bill by 18%. I’ve fought to block $700 million in requested rate hikes from gas, electric, and water companies owned by both Eversource and United Illuminating. We’re going to continue that work.
Today, we announced a settlement holding 23andMe accountable for its 2023 data breach. 23andMe collected sensitive genetic data and they failed to safeguard it. We led the country in investigating and were actively involved at every step of this bankruptcy proceeding.
For the second time in one week, we are back in court, facing off against a President refusing to release Connecticut funds. On Tuesday, it was homelessness funding. Now, it's $3 million for mental health support for Connecticut kids— funding that the court has already ordered must be released.
I joined a coalition of AGs to sue to block Paramount Skydance’s proposed $110 billion acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery. This merger will create a media behemoth capable of controlling the film/tv industry. States are once again filling the antitrust enforcement void left by the Trump DOJ.
I joined a coalition of AGs urging the US Trade Representative to abandon its latest unlawful tariff proposal. We sued and stopped Trump's illegal tariffs twice. He's back with another illegal, irrational attempt to jack up costs for Americans to fund his ballrooms and tax breaks for billionaires.
Today, we secured a $45 million settlement with Block Inc., the company that owns Cash App. This settlement delivers $1.5 million to Connecticut while forcing major reforms on the platform, including real customer support, transparency and honest communication with users, and security commitments.
Trump tried to impose drastic, cruel conditions on homelessness funding. We sued, we won, but now Trump is back at it again. His cruelty truly has no bounds. We are heading back to court, and we will keep fighting for as long as it takes.
Today we celebrate the freedoms that define our nation and remember those who have worked to protect them throughout the last 250 years. Hapy a safe, fun, and happy Independence Day.
America's story has always been an immigrant story. It was great to join IRIS for its America 250 celebration and recognize the generations of immigrants who have helped build, strengthen, and shape our country. Happy Independence Day!
Effective July 1, CT has stronger protections for children online. Big Tech has treated our kids like social media cash cows and now we're taking matters into our own hands. CT has one of the strongest data privacy laws on the books, and we’ll use every inch of our authority to protect our kids.
Our assault weapon ban is lawful, lifesaving and broadly supported. The gun lobby has flooded the courts in states across the country to get an assault weapons case up to this Supreme Court. We’re going to fight to keep these weapons of war off our streets, out of schools, and away from our families.
Today is not just a legal victory. Today is a second ratification of the Fourteenth Amendment, on the 250th anniversary of our nation’s birth, by which we affirm as a people the essential character of our nation built by the sacrifice, ambition, and unyielding labor of immigrant hands.
We joined a bipartisan coalition of AGs in securing a $3.3 million settlement and 53 million free eggs nationwide, including 1.5 million eggs for CT. These massive egg producers rigged the system to jack up profits, and all of us paid for it.
2 wins in 2 days. Today, a federal court blocked another unlawful executive order, stopping President Trump’s attempt to interfere with states’ authority to administer elections. Yesterday, a judge blocked another election executive order. These are critical wins heading into the November elections.
We pushed for stronger safeguards against the illegal sale of bootleg vapes and Shopify answered the call by banning the sale of all e-cigarette and vaping products on its platform. Illegally imported bootleg vapes are untested and unsafe, and I welcome Shopify’s decision.
A court has blocked key provisions of an exec order forcing states to impose new proof of citizenship requirements for voter registration while threatening fed funding for states that refused to comply. This was a blatantly unconstitutional effort by Trump to unlawfully commandeer state elections.
Thank you to CNN and Laura Coates for having me on last night to discuss birthright citizenship as we await the Supreme Court’s ruling. The Constitution is clear. If you are born in American soil, you are an American. This is my story and the story of millions of Americans.
Happy Father's Day to all the dad and father figures! Thank you for all you do.
Today, we celebrate freedom, and resilience. And we recommit to the ongoing work to build a more just future for everyone.
Today, we announced a $7 million settlement with LivCor for its role in an alleged scheme that used RealPage’s algorithms and competitors’ pricing data to drive up rents. Our case against RealPage and others is ongoing and we are prepared to use the full weight of our law enforcement authority.
Had a wonderful time at the annual Triangle Community Center's Pride in the Park in Norwalk! The Triangle Community Center has been around since 1990 and is the region's largest nonprofit exclusively serving queer and trans communities.
Congratulations to the New York Knicks on winning the NBA championship! This video is from when the Knicks honored me on AAPI Night and invited me to deliver the game ball to the officials before tipoff.
I'm joining a coalition of AGs in suing the Trump Admin over its move to purge DEI from federal contracts. No one has any clue what this executive order requires, except that federal contractors and states stand to lose billions in contracts if we don't pass some magical MAGA litmus test.
We just secured a final ruling from the U.S. District Court of Massachusetts finding unlawful and vacating the Trump Administration’s policy imposing a $100,000 tax payment on new H-1B visa petitions.
I was appalled to learn that Scott Pelley was fired. When I appeared on 60 Minutes to raise awareness about our genetic drug price fixing case, I relied on journalists committed to informing the public. At a time of increasing media consolidation, we need more independent journalism, not less.
The CT OAG and the DCP are launching an investigation into former New Britian Mayor Erin Stewart's handling of the charitable assets for the benefit of the Mayor's Trophy Charitable Fund. You can find more information about the investigation our website: portal.ct.gov/ag/press-rel...
