I'm mostly stunned that this is charging forward with none of this information easily available, and before any terms or agreement even exists! Who exactly needs this and why? Will the answers even be valid when the buildings are finished? Why should we reserve valuable space now for data later?

Despite announcing Telus’s data centre expansion, the federal government has not yet agreed on any terms or amounts to fund, finance or invest in the project. Instead, it is entering discussions with Telus and the proponents of about 160 other projects before considering support for any centres.

Genuine question, is any other project drawing the equivalent of 85,000 BC homes that these three buildings will? If so, that's fair I guess... but if not, I think the "different rates" should apply immediately.

However, she confirmed the company has already secured access to power for the project’s initial power draw and will be charged BC Hydro’s standard commercial or industrial rates.

She added that if the project wanted to expand its capacity and consume more power, it would have to compete in the B.C. government’s new application process for AI and data centres and may be subject to different rates.

Love that the author goes on to both-sides this by hitting the One City statement with the ol' Merriam-Webster check.

OneCity Vancouver, represented on council by Lucy Mahoney and in the mayoral race with candidate William Azaroff, issued a news release following the mayor’s speech.

“He’s promising another tax freeze and a $400 million slush fund to pull the wool over the eyes of Vancouverites,” the release said.

According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, a slush fund is “an unregulated fund often used for illicit purposes.”

That is not an accurate description of what the mayor pitched as a plan to upgrade community centres through the city’s legitimate capital plan process.

Unfortunately, I won't be going to GDC this year. It was an honour to have our talk selected and I was looking forward to it, and to catch up with my Bay Area friends. It's just not safe to cross the border, even to San Francisco. Someday soon, I hope.

This morning the ABC-majority council voted to pursue a 0% increase to property taxes for next year. The city staff's report recommended 5-7% just to maintain services. Every non-ABC councillor opposed. A number of opposition call-in comments usually only seen for rezoning motions. Passed 6-4.
